Guaranteeing building work - how long?

Yes, that is a good point but I do see it from their perspective also, ie you wouldn’t expect a patio to NOT withstand foot traffic but for how long? I’d like to say a year but even I don’t think that is ‘reasonable’, however, two years - surely too long……and so somewhere in between…….perhaps??

Guaranteeing building work - how long?

The reason behind my original post was that the nephew of one of my mates (simple sole trader) laid a large 200 slab patio (Indian stone) 14 months ago and he has been called back to relay 3 ‘loose’ slabs (3 visits, one slab per visit)…..he’s always gone back to put them right BUT at what point...

Guaranteeing building work - how long?

Hi all, Following a ‘random’ pub group discussion the other day its left me wondering about how long should a ’one-man band’/single tradesman guarantee their work? I’m not talking about large/medium or even small building constructions (ie extensions etc) but jobs like small garden walls...

    Joke Thread II

Good god! Funny jokes on the joke thread and, not yet anyway, anyone asking someone to explain them. I need to sit down…

    Help pricing work.

Eh? Not sure I follow you….I did edit somewhere (I often do) but I don’t control where it’s placed, I simply edited it (can’t even remember what I edited). Your post about 2.5% discount I referenced in my subsequent comment. I didn’t realise that we were being forensically audited either...

    Help pricing work.

Aye, you’re right…..it’s only when you realise that for some of the smaller subcontractors who have to ‘fight’ to survive (ie are continually pressurised to reduce their sums) that, potentially, may only be making smaller profit, could have all of it wiped out by those contractors (all?) who...

How to check your TV zapper is working.

Humorous line from the very gently, but funny, ‘Detectorists’ comedy. He was trying to ‘woo’ his girlfriend back after she had left him……in regard to the numerous remote controls they had, it went something like “please come back, your the only one that knows how to turn the tv on”

    Help pricing work.

I find the topic fascinating, moreso in regard to the number of varied approaches taken by firms. The reason I posted earlier was simply to point out the fundamentals and the difference between direct/indirect costs……over the years I’ve seen so many people misunderstand the basics and then...

    Help pricing work.

From a retired QS/Estimator’s perspective…… Over the years I’ve seen many, often crazy, approaches to pricing work. Without going into too much depth there is, however, the basic formula of cost determination….. Labour + Plant (tools) + Materials + Sub-contractors (if used) = total ‘direct’...

    Castor wheel

I bought one a few years back and, yes, it’s literally a bl**dy pain to move around, especially on our very uneven garden. Keep promising myself to add wheels but another one of those jobs I haven’t got around to 🙄 Well done for doing yours…..here’s hoping 🙂

    Solar panels.

Every time I read about existing solar installations it always comes back to virtually the same basic summary…..ie payback in around 10yrs.…..ours exactly the same. The payback period is also relative in regard to whatever the installation cost was….in other words (and in regard to the FIT...

    Plaster repair after leak.

Yes, I would agree with your suggestion to ask a surveyor. I’m a version that retired a few years ago and have seen plenty of examples of rising damp, as did all of my colleagues. I would suggest that any other uncorroborated comments are labelled as opinions and not purported as fact. 👍

    How to attach drawer fronts?

Yeah, two part epoxy, the ones with the ‘mixing’ syringe, Araldite if I remember correctly. I’d never used it before but had some in an unopened case (can’t remember exactly why - probably a random Aldi shelf grab knowing me)…..From memory I think I was pondering on how to join them with...

    How to attach drawer fronts?

Forgot to state that my drawers were only 3 sided and so had no false fronts. Used those clamps to position the gloss fronts and then fixed them with ‘L’ brackets to the drawers.

    How to attach drawer fronts?

A few years back I made some drawers for our attic conversion storage and wanted to fit ikea gloss ’fronts’ to them. Did some searching and came across these….. Changing soffits (and maybe fascias and gutters) before a re-roof. Is that stupid?

Anyway, back to the original question……if you think about it for a mo, most re-roofings (coverings only) pay no attention to the fascia and gutters as they are, in general (as you’ve already thought), separate components. However, it’s worth understanding and considering the following…… The top...

Air source Heat Pumps any good?

The issue there, is that the sun doesn’t shine in the evening ie when heating is more likely to be required and so you’re then either dependant upon the grid or, if you can afford it (more below) a battery backup system. We had a 4.2kw solar system fitted about 3yrs ago and it works as well as...
