    Lost in Transit

As above. Set it out very factually and coldly, moved on... advised you of missing items on... chased on etc etc. You have told me that you have involved your insurer, but that is a matter between you and them. My contract is with you. As I have had no meaningful contact from you I now...

    Bulb Energy has gone pop

When suppliers fail, ofgem normally broker a seamless transfer to a new supplier. It can take a while for credit balances to get sorted, but they do. Bulb is different, it is so big that the regulator is going to run it directly for a while until it finds takers for all 1.7 million customers...

    Ageing copper

I've used ammonia fuming successfully for patinating copper leaf on turned items. Ammonia in a plastic pot of some kind, item above it not in it, clingfilm over the top to keep fumes in. I used a margarine tub. You can vary it by painting on vinegar or salt solution beforehand, each gives a...

Possible to covert cordeless tool to corded?

The battery charger idea is worth a go, but it needs to be an old simple 12v charger. Modern ones have all sorts gubbins to protect your car battery and circuits, and won't even start up inless they sense a voltage. Or see if you can run it off an old 12v car battery if you have one kicking...

    Self employment

Thats fair enough. I speak as a customer (I'm on this forum as a keen amateur woodwroker, not doing it for a living). Part of our house spend this year was a new oil boiler - original was 35 years old. That, the roof and some patio doors all part of the plan to get house in shape for the next...

    Ww2 Records, Any tips?

You might find something on National Archives but by a backwards route if you have details of which unit he was in and when. I knew from a few scant notes my father's squadron in the RAF and the months he was on operational flights (as a pilot in a Baltimore) in Italy. National Archive has...

    Self employment

I've been self employed - sole trader not limited company - for over 15 years. Very different field - HR. Company I worked for got merged, choice of staying or going with a good deal so I went. Never had to advertise, all came by word of mouth, now almost 70 and 'retired' except that some...

    A Bucky Lamp WIP

Good stuff, thanks. I've always found bucky balls fascinating although hard to get your head around - hexagons and pentagons but seen as an open frame it's a load of triangles . There was a whole sub culture of buckyball desert dwelling in the USA. Just for interest and not helping your build...

    Minor PC problem.

Another thought, is reboot taking too long? Maybde you can live with having to reboot if it is faster. Lots of apps install things in startup routine without asking you or telling you, and will re-install in startup if you get an update. For example Adobe Acrobat, but they don't need to. If...

    Minor PC problem.

Agreed, my very old machine got confused when the monitor went off but the newer one seems to cope. Other things to look at: Settings - system - power & sleep - you will have set the sleep time to never but also have a look at related settings - additional power settings and dig in to all the...

    Recommendations for wood moisture meters?

I picked up a Silverline one, less than £20 but you do have to buy batteries on top. LR44s, easy to get. Search for Silverline Moisture meter. I think silverline is just an importing/ labelling brand so its probably cheap and chinese inside but it works. It was on my 'mental one day' list...

    Sieve making - interesting article

Some might fing this a pleasant read, with nice workshop pictures. I must admit I hadn't thought about sieve making before. Or sieves for that matter. It looks like something many wood workers could do, but you would need to get very fast to make a living from it...

Have you had your booster *** ?

The OP asked if the booster was shown on the online 'vaccine certificate'. Had mine, and no its not, the system isn't configured to record a 3rd. That shouldn't matter, but I see that France (who did booster rollout rather faster than we did) is saying the covid certificates for over 65s...

    Joining water butts in series

Conventional way is joining at the bottom, dead simple. Lagging surely not necessary because you only really use water in the garden when its not freezing weather. West Somerset rarely suffers deep freeze conditions. Stopcocks a nice idea but if you lost all your water it's inconvenient but...

    Working with Hawthorn

I had some small pieces from hedge cutting. Made a couple of very small maybe 3 Inch diameter shallow nut-serving bowls. Turned green, microwave seasoned then re-turned. Nice finish and a lovely ivory colour. Good stuff, you are lucky if you have decent sized pieces.

    And now the fun begins!

It's a record power thing perhaps. They describe their 50 and 35mm as standard in the brochure, the 50 comes with the starter kit, all others have fancy names.

    Wanted Decent quality splitting axes

Canalside OK. Proper steel boat might be OK, but never chop wood in a rubber boat.

Advice needed on a buffer tree for my lathe

Inspector mentions draw bar, vital. Morse taper not suitable for sideways load and can precess out very very very... etc... very very fast. Been there. Luckily went up not at me. I use buffer occasionally, only thing I would add to the above is put a small sheet of thin ply or mdf under the...

    Yandles appreciation post 😁

SC3 case is a faff to use especially if you get more jaws later on. Save your time, and glue, get a biscuit tin :).

    And now the fun begins!

Maybe a slight risk of marking the wood if you don't, but high risk of dust and stuff sticking to it. If I recall mine felt tacky straight out of the box. Suppose it depends how long it's been in storage. Feels lots nicer to handle if you clean it and only takes a few moments. Enjoy.
