    Making a finial

How about making it as a regular non tapered hexagon on the Bandsaw, about 20mm longer than you need. Then cut the tapers but stop/ back up when you get to the waste end, that way the waste fingers stay in place. I think you would start the cuts at the fat end but it's too late at night to...

    How thick?

I think common sense, look and feel is the way to go. I recently turned a fairly deep shape, maybe 18 cm diameter, such that the whole thing was close to half a sphere aside from an external flat bottom, from spalted beech, and left a very consitent 12mm wall thickness and dead flat rim, the...

    New kitchen

I wonder if the supply voltage has anything to do with it. 240v in Europe kills you faster than 120v in the USA so maybe electrical regulations rule out taps above hobs here. I think there is a minimum permitted distance between an electric socket and a sink/tap, maybe the same applies to...

    New Fence Posts?

I know them as godfathers but I wonder if it's fallen out of use or if it was regional. He grazed his leg on a godfather as he walked down the snicket. He grazed his leg on a concrete spur as he walked down the alley .... bit like that. Who knows. It gets blank looks even from fencing...

    New Fence Posts?

A very good point. I had a lot of sturdy close boarded fencing with a few posts "going" at the bottom. Spent a couple of hours breaking up the concrete at the bottom of one, builder had thrown in bits of flint and all sorts, then it occurred to me to leave all the rest in place and simply put...

    Stuck ball valve

Its handy to know where your incoming main stopcock is, and the water company one which can be anywhere between the road and the house. My daughter moved in to a 1930's house recently and as part of mapping things out I found her in house one in the understairs cupboard and the water company...

FedEx - the most spectacularly incompetent carrier of them all !

All of these delivery companies stand or fall on the last link, the person who actually delivers the package. OK, they can all have issues with warehouses, tracking and systems but those are visible and can be corrected, what the courier can never see is how the delivery person behaves. All...

    SC3 adaptor M33x3.5 to 1"x10tpi

I thought I had posted this ages ago, but it must have got stuck in the U bend of internet eternity. Here we go again. Record sell the SC3 as a kit with jaws and other things but they used to sell it 'bare'. Maybe you can find one for not too much money if anyone has leftovers in stock, and...

    Advice for new carer

It's a complex set of systems. This is my understanding based on experience. Attendance allowance comes via DWP, is paid a 2 levels, is not means tested, and gives some support to help people live independently rather than in care home. It is independent of anything else and can continue even...

    SC3 adaptor M33x3.5 to 1"x10tpi

The SC3 comes in diferent versions, each a fixed size rather than insert. I have the same M33 one. You might get answers if you post this in the woodturning forum below.

The wrong sort of metric tape

Back in the 70's I worked in HR (personnel back then) in a large factory that made switch and fuse gear. Most of our products were standard and went out pre packed and palletised, but some were specials and some were ordered by the containerload - especially export, we want to fill a 20ft...

    Traveling chest

Its a nice idea, but I wonder how well it will fit into their lifestyles when they first leave home? My daughter hasn't lived at home for 10 years, and has only just now got a house of her own - a smallish semi. In those 10 years she has worked in 2 different cities and studied in the Uk and...

    help with age of table

I thought domino, the shelf below should be the right height for a pint tankard so the playing surface remains unobstructed and the pint safe from being knocked over when the arms start flying. Room for your 'baccy pouch and pipe or cigarette papers as well. Depending on what you want it for...

    Anyone with NOW broadband?

I have the fritz box but haven't used the phone facilities, I just plugged a very old dect phone base station into the wall socket via a microfilter. This thread reminds me that I should really have a poke around at what the router can and cannot do. I will report back if I find anything...

    Anyone with NOW broadband?

I've had excellent service from Zen for about 7 years now, Crystal clear pricing, they just do phone and Internet so it's not all bundled up with entertainment packages. I've only had 2 reasons to call in faults during that time, both resolved quickly and easily. All based in and around...

    What are these handles called?

I can see a great attraction in having the 'proper thing' if it is to be used a lot, but for a general diy er like me who does some turning, a bit of plumbing, some box making, a bit of bookshelf making, a bit of car fixing, bit of sculpture .... well, you can't justify the cost of proper things...

    Emulsion paint

For years now I have used Dulux Trade from my local builders merchant, variety of finishes, mostly matt, all have been fine. I use the colour mixing method, and keep a spreadsheet by room, quantity needed and dulux colour code. It's never out of stock and very easy to buy again if you need...

    Faceplate for axminster m900

I too use reisser, self cutting and always give nice tight fit. I keep a tin of them in my 'chuck box' and use the longest ones consistent with the job I am doing. Screws are not a big part o fmy woodworking expenses (I'm diy/hobby) so I use reisser for most things now, they are so good...

    Electric vehicles - again

Yes I know, it wasn't a serious suggestion. Maybe modular battery packs, plug an extra one in for long trips... who knows. I expect the technology and useability to evolve pretty quickly in the next few years.

    Electric vehicles - again

Ah, good way to buy cars, that's what I have done in recent years. Keep for 5 years or so, depreciation well controlled. I suspect pre owned EVs are pretty rare now.
