    What wood

Almost certainly sapele, sometimes confusingly called "sapele mahogany" by some sellers. All of the internal doors in my house are just like those, house built 1986 ish. I can live with them but wouldn't choose them, I've stained with a high build dark woodstain a few times over the years...

    Off my nut

The OPs problem was not being able to access a dentist. Ive just read a rather frightening article in the Guardian - a different issue but it shows how serious things can get if untreated. I thought others might be interested...

    Milling job required Manchester

A skilled machinist doing non standard work (not a semi skilled machine operator) will be paid £15 an hour or so. The employer has to add employers NI, statutory pension contributions and other odd bits so the person costs close to £20 an hour. Then you have to add premises, rent rates and...

A post about nothing much at all.

Excellent, I might have done the same. I love making stuff "for free" from bits and pieces I have around. My daughter had the opposite problem, got a skip in soon after they moved in to their first house to get rid of loads of real rubbish the elderly vendor had left behind, realised they had...

Help please - "tool" gone "all sticky" outside

Presumably bear trimmers have very long handles so you are safe if the bear gets angry whilst being trimmed :)

Help please - "tool" gone "all sticky" outside

Our not so cheap pure radio did the same, kept on a shelf and used daily so not stored away. You can try the talc approach, that just sticks on so it doesn't feel as bad. I got it off the main bits you handle with meths, many sheets of kitchen roll and hard labour just because it felt so...

Opinions on these ex-school workshop workbenches.

If the price is right, I wonder if you could buy both, adapt the legs of the worst to make the best one 4 legged and more sturdy, use bits of one vice to add a tail vice or similar and some of the unused top as a fold out extension for assembly work, other odd bits of the sacrificed one perhaps...

    Coronet Herald and Tools advice

A lot of stands are standard size for standard sized people, some are adjustable with limited range. If you are non standard sized (no need to tell us), a DIY answer might be better.

    Jet Bandsaw & blades

It sounds like the blade might be sitting too far back. Where is the blade sitting on the top wheel, have you adjusted the tracking at all, did you adjust the tracking as you tensioned the blade ? My machine is much smaller, but to get the blade where it needs to be you have to 'tweak' the...

Getting from the car to work

Roof-rack mounted pull-cord activated trebuchet? There are many things we don't know which might affect your choice - facilities where you work (even a brompton can be dripping wet), traffic and pedestrian density, terrain, surface quality. I had thought of a folding kick scooter as mentioned...

    Shelves in odd-shaped alcoves....

My first house, 1976, had an alcove in the dining room perfect for bookshelves. House built early 1920's. I didn't have much experience or money, so carefully cut cardboard templates and used them to mark out and cut some conti-board to fit, it varied with position so each one was unique...

Getting from the car to work

A purposeful walking pace is 3mph give or take, so half a mile is 10 minutes. Add a bit for road crossing etc. but from turning off your car engine to actually starting work should be under 15 minutes. You need a warm coat for cold days and a waterproof coat for wet days, plus decent shoes but...

There's a separate woodturning-lathes forum a little below general Woodworking on this site. You might get a better response there.

    Gmail help please

Thare are all kinds of 'spam' controls and some will reject no header, no content or certain kinds of content or attachments - even down to character strings in the email. Another is 'flood control' - if a server sees a lot of similar email coming at the same time from the same place(s) it...

    Oil stone revival.

Thanks both Sounds like a common sense approach won't do any damage. Pete - to do your first suggestion would mean going to a place I don't much want to yet at only 70 :) We do have our neighbours keys when they are on holiday though ....hmmmm

    Kitchen Cabinet paint

I used Ronseal satin interior clear varnish, water based, quick dry, has lasted well on a few things. Then I started using Screwfix own brand, half the price and as far as I can tell just the same, takes a bit longer to dry - 60 mins to touch dry 4 hrs to recoat stage from memory. You can get 2...

    Oil stone revival.

In the bottom of a box that came from my father's garage I found 2 Stanley spokeshaves and an oil stone. Grey, fine, nice and flat. It was probably last used 40+ years ago. It's encrusted and clogged with ancient dried on oil, I was thinking of hot water wash, rub with kitchen detergent...

    Hardwood Window Cill

Good advice. I've always used Sadolin products just because that is what the local merchants stocked 25 years ago when I moved in. Sikkens should be just as good or better. Someone on here published their own comparison trial and if I recall both did very well. Main thing, use a decent...
