    Bowl Thickness Calipers for woodturning?

Are you sure you need and will use them? I don't recall any demonstrators using calipers and I find fingers do a good job. I bought some when I started out but don't recall when I last used or even saw them. I guess they are useful for repeat work or work to defined dimensions so maybe it...

    What connector is this?

Back in the 70s and 80s when I fixed my own cars, fork connectors of that general type were pretty common, you might find some in a halfrauds or local car spares shop if any still exist.

Circlips - what's the magic secret?

I have one of those tools that can be switched for internal or external. Remember using it on my Austin Maxi so it must be 40+ years old, don't use it much. It's not brilliant at either and I often wish I had bought a proper pair of ins and outs. I hate working with them. Assume the clip...

Worcestershire newbie bowl turner needs a trainer for half a day

Yes, awgb has a list of clubs and trainers. There is a lot of good stuff on their website that non members can access, need to dig around a bit in the resources menus. It's only about £20 a year to join and they do subsidised one day courses for members.

My wife's died. Well, according to Inland Revenue....

Not a bad idea, especially if you can get an in-person MP surgery appointment with your wife present to demonstrate how un-dead she is. Look, breathing in and out, just like you etc.

My wife's died. Well, according to Inland Revenue....

I hope you sort it out quickly - there can be knock on effects. I ran a large pension fund and our administrators had permitted access to the government NI number database to check that all the people we paid pensions to were still alive. We always made our own enquiries before acting on it if...

    jacubs chuck

Yes, understand that. I did point out that the risk came when you applied sideways pressure eg with a polishing wheel as an example. (Maybe you didn't read that far.)

    Severance negotiations

Indeed, but much of the comment here is generic rather than specific so might be of use or interest to others. At the very least it has clarified right to be accompanied or not in different situations, and the importance of thinking about what outcome you want. Look before you leap. When you...

    Severance negotiations

I wiould see how it pans out first. Fixable or not? If it all seems reasonable and the outcome suits you then you might leave lawyers out of it as long as you can. I am retired, still do a bit of advice to clients, but was an HR Manager then HR Director for a company going through lots of...

    jacubs chuck

As above really, most drill bits are stepped so will fit a 13, I often use a 16mm stepped bit. The smaller chucks are often better with very small bits. If you think you might ever want to run the chuck in the powered headstock end, get one with an internal thread in the more taper end, that...

    This could be interesting ...

Not sure Waterstones are.much better, owned by US Hedge. Fund with various Bermuda and Cayman holding companies. See if there is a local independent bookseller you can support. At least you can browse the books in Waterstones so I guess it's one step up on Amazon.

    Severance negotiations

Maybe you should, if by that you mean it would be better, but as many have already said in this thread you have no legal right to be accompanied unless it is a formal disciplinary or grievance meeting or a formal redundancy consultation. No point wasting energy or falling out trying to enforce...

    Severance negotiations

Should have said, at least 4 weeks. You are entitled to the higher of statutory or your contract of employment. Statutory notiic (over 2 yrs service) is one week per year to cap 12, so in your case 4. If your contract says (say 3 months then they have to gove you that.

    Severance negotiations

Started writing this and see others have contributed along the same lines I started so at the risk of some repitition but some new stuff, here we go. If it's not a formal disciplinary meeting the employer is under no obligation to allow a rep or colleague to attend. Even for an...

    Kitchen floooring recommendations

All good suggestions but we know nothing about how you will use the space, not that we need to, but you should think about it. When we moved to this house we had a 2 year old and a baby. The kitchen had ceramic floor tiles, the late 80's trendy octagonal white ones with black squares. Plastic...

Advice on how I could have done better please

Looks good nice design, new to me. I wonder if.... I can see that it's useful to drill the holes before you hollow, but would it work if you drilled small pilot holes for position then finished to size after hollowing? Leaves it stronger while you do the difficult work.

Water proofing inside a wooden vase

The problem with vases is that they are covered in water for long periods. You can use some timbers as bowls, drinking vessles or whatever but they are only immersed for short periods. I've tried various things with vases, some say epoxy works but not all epoxy is suitable for long term...

    Coffee Container lining question

I keep a few days worth of coffee beans in an elm container, lined with a cut down coke can. Most 330 ml cans - coke, beer etc are 63mm diameter, so a 3 inch spindle can get you a thin walled pot just about big enough. The lid has a step then a tapered push fit bit. If you are going a bit...

    Lathe not starting.

It would help others help you if the thread title related to the problem you have and if you told us a bit more about the lathe. Also what you have tried already. My approach would be #1 spindle lock, #2 spin by hand, how does it feel, #3 slacken belt slightly, maybe it was too tight, #4 take...
