Dealing with timber yard (Hymor in Stoke) can't just get basic pricing

does seem a bit strange - not sure that is ideal from your perspective - however, the reality is that they will probably have systems which work for the majority of their customers, and if you don't fall into that bracket... pricing is strange - some companies of this nature have this practice...

Dealing with timber yard (Hymor in Stoke) can't just get basic pricing

I think that is why a lot depends on how you build a relationship - I would pop down, acknowledge the need for distancing and masks etc. - and say to them something along the lines of - I know I am a bit fussy and don't want to cause you too much trouble - would it be easier if I popped in with...

Dealing with timber yard (Hymor in Stoke) can't just get basic pricing

yes - that is rough sawn and waney edged... I think that it is important as the customer to think from their perspective: - waney edge is a plank from the tree - rough sawn is a shaped version of waney edge (so timber lost and a process added = extra cost) - PAR is then finished by planing all...

Dealing with timber yard (Hymor in Stoke) can't just get basic pricing

I think there is a lot to be said for building a relationship - and being very open - all of which is better done face to face. I went into the local yard wanting some simple softwood for a planter - and then some hardwood to play with to make some kids building bricks. I was very open with the...

Dealing with timber yard (Hymor in Stoke) can't just get basic pricing

when they say no-one in the yard - how are they doing any sales? Are they letting you into the shop / parking and then they get the wood? If so, pop down and chat to them - most companies are quite friendly when chatting face to face - and if they are not, you will soon realise that they are not...

    Apprenticeships

Technically yes, the London livery companies still run apprenticeships, however they are more of an entry route into the livery company in question... when I had an apprentice we had the formal paperwork, separated and one half filed in theHall, one half in Guildhall - quite fun to go through...

Charnwood SS16F Charnwood Scroll Saw with Variable Speed Scroll...

It depends on what you mean by quality - and it is also a financial decision... If by quality you mean a saw which will last 30 years, then yes financially it is a better cost per year - however, that is balanced against the risk factor of whether it is something I will do for 30 years! If not...

Charnwood SS16F Charnwood Scroll Saw with Variable Speed Scroll...

The cut-outs on the top bar are to place the adaptors for pinless blades - you use them to tension the blade correctly... so yes, it will take both pinned / pinless... when I looked though all the advice on here - there were many good points made - but ultimately each person needs to make a...

Charnwood SS16F Charnwood Scroll Saw with Variable Speed Scroll...

Happy with that - in reality, a year is good enough to know whether it is total rubbish - or usable!

Charnwood SS16F Charnwood Scroll Saw with Variable Speed Scroll...

It looks absolutely identical to the Record Power one I bought last week - same price, but mine didn't have the foot pedal / rotary shaft (I have a Dremel anyway, so don't need that bit) news so far - from someone with few skills :) - very nice machine which seems to cut straight (or curved as...

Making toys for 4 year olds

when my 6 year old nephew was over earlier in the summer, he was very happy playing with mdf offcuts - making buildings for the lego vehicles he was constructing, children of that age love imaginative play, some wooden toys will be very popular, others needing little imagination may not be so...

Making toys for 4 year olds

This is my focus also - my plans for now are to make a set of 'blocks' as that is a very generic toy which allows them to use their imagination, it also allows me to use up scraps of wood - I also plan to make some very simple interlocking walls - some looking like castle walls, some plain - so...

I love the look of that -I think there are those (including me!) who are very pleased by neat lines and repeating patterns :) others prefer a more natural look...

    Electric chainsaw experience

Agree - I think there is definitely a case of kit for job... I do know a couple of tree surgeons who are now entirely electric, but I suspect that their business is conveniently skewed to work which suits that... It would be interesting to know whether the move to more robust electric kit has...

    Electric chainsaw experience

Having only owned a petrol chainsaw - and now having none, nor much need, I am probably not able to offer much expertise - a friend has the Makita electric chainsaw and is very pleased with it - though perhaps his use is more hobbyist than professional - however, most of the professional tree...

Chipped edges on new planes and do new planes need sharpening before use?

It is tricky - but as you say, there is some good honest to the point advice on here which is hopefully guiding me... at the moment I am spending time on Paul Sellers' websites - he seems to have respect from others, and has a lot of very good material from beginners - so I am hoping that time...

Chipped edges on new planes and do new planes need sharpening before use?

Agree - and for someone like me - just starting out, it is a challenge to know where to turn to learn - there are no courses running due to Covid and youtube doesn't give that feedback - not sure whether you can hire in a personal trainer in woodwork :) but maybe that is the way forward?! I...

Chipped edges on new planes and do new planes need sharpening before use?

Agree - we are adults who can take responsibility for our own actions... but... this is a good example of communication giving clarity - takes little effort for manufacturer / reseller, and avoids doubt - also give the reseller less grief as people are under no false impression!
