Settlers of Catan - or cutting hexagons...

thank you - good spot... will try it tonight, so see how mine does... I think that you are right (as are other above), a shooting board may be best... but I like playing with machinery as well :) thank you for your kind comment on my first set - I am not unhappy with them and they did improve...

Settlers of Catan - or cutting hexagons...

intriguing and worth looking at... even better is the video linked to at the end of that one - how to do it with a simple stop on the mitre saw (which I do have!) - worth trying...

Settlers of Catan - or cutting hexagons...

sadly above mine as well - the bench sander has a fence you can set to 30 degrees but I think there are few boundaries that limit my incompetence! So I wasn't getting fully accurate sanding - need to practise I think...

Settlers of Catan - or cutting hexagons...

I have a bench mounted disk / belt sander which has a mitre on the front table which allows 30 / 60 degrees - however, there is no first accurate side from which to take the next sides, and in fact it is a cheap one where the setup is probably not really as accurate as I would like... how were...

Settlers of Catan - or cutting hexagons...

In theory yes, as long as I line up the laser correctly which is reasonably easy... the boards are PAR so start pretty parallel... shooting board seems interesting, would love to see what folks think up!

Settlers of Catan - or cutting hexagons...

Thank you both for two different suggestions... if I engraved after making the pieces, in theory a 30deg / 60deg setting on the mitre saw could actually cut the items initially - one to play with on some scrap... will also have a look at the router - I think my lack of experience with that...

Settlers of Catan - or cutting hexagons...

So, I decided to make a wooden set of the hexagonal tiles for Settlers of Catan (for those who don't know, it is a very popular board game) In the basic board (you can get extensions), there are 6 tile types for which I used 6 wood types - all 6mm planks as shown below - Iron Ore - purpleheart -...

    Patent versus Copyright

Patents do have the potential issue of showing the competition how to get around the patent, however they do have advantages - one of the biggest is funding. My first business was R&D in equestrian safety and we held a global patent for protection against 360deg crushing of the torso (very...

An interesting request - a 'games' dining table - Hertfordshire area- Bespoke build

billiards table with leaves to make a dining table is a fairly standard 'antique' item - I have friends who had one in their last house... very comfortable to sit at for dinner, and fun also playing billiards on it :) not sure that air hockey was invented in those days (when the table was made!)

New Workshop Build - I don't know where to start

anything forward of the front facade of the house (or a line drawn on from there) needs planning permission - I am no expert, but everything I have read suggests that it is very difficult to get planning permission in front of the house - clearly not impossible as I have seen houses being built...

Lumberjack / Excel router table advice

If the Rutlands one is rubbish and a rebadged version of the Excel one will that not be the same? I am fairly agnostic to Rutlands - I have a couple of things from them and they are fine... they do seem to have much better stock control than some other companies... and a much better website...

    Amazon versus Screwfix

That is a key part of what I do for our clients - and it is much cheaper to start than expected, though more expensive to do properly than expected!

    Amazon versus Screwfix

I have mixed views - if you just buy without thinking from any source, then you may pay over the odds - but keeping an eye on pricing can find it cheaper at different times - I bought a router from Amazon which fluctuated in price but the price I bought it at was the cheapest in over 5 years...

    pH testing

From my research, the probes appear to be very inaccurate - a lot of gardening forums talk about results correlated against a proper soil test (sent away) and getting very different results... The strips are meant to be quite accurate - I have some (not yet used), but have used them or similar...

    Scrabble tabble

love it - but intrigued... what was your thinking behind having the dowels rather than for example inlays - was it to hold the tiles in place as you rotate the top? don't think that my scrabble board has any means of holding the tiles in place and that hasn't been a big issue...

Traditional crafts of the future, what might they be, and how will they be made?

Any time when you mix a bit of sawdust and glue and fill a crack - is that not additive construction?! :) Segmented wood turning -> additive? If so, then may be it will be about a re-imagining of how we handle materials, not just a change in materials... Do your wood-turning, gather up the...
