    re-level wonky cabin

If you can raise the shed then do so. Shim with quarry tiles and slate along the full length of each joist so the whole thing is up of the slab. Colin

    Not so smart meter

I had a Smart meter installed at my previous house by my choice as part of a major re-furb. In my current new build it was the default fitting. Smart meters are fine. They send the data required to your provider and if/when flexible tariffs are available then you can be charged accordingly for...

    Best paint for cast iron?

I also agree about Hammerite not being the paint of choice. It is great on machinery but it can crack and chip. In the 80's I owned a 30's house with metal windows that had gone very rusty. I had to cold chisel out the rust, treat with Rust Cure, then a specialist primer and finished of with an...

    Best paint for cast iron?

My initial thoughts are your choice of a water based primer. I use water based paints on everything inside and out, except when in contact with metal or when priming anything outside. My fear is the only way to rectify the situation is removal of the guttering and taking back to metal before...

    Bitumen roof repair

Ideally something like this Bostik Feltfix Bituminous Roof Felt Adhesive Black 5Ltr - Screwfix but it usually comes in large tins. Due to the small area I'd be tempted to use this Geocel Trade Mate Roofers Seal Lead Grey 310ml - Screwfix. I think it would be more likely to come in handy for...

    Painting Behind Water Pipes

Try a radiator roller to get to the back of the pipes. I'm guessing the walls and pipes are the same colour so that they blend in. Colin

Best wood for this project? (Advice needed)

Natalie, are you using Birch plywood specifically sold for use on a CNC laser cutter. When I taught we sourced our material from K&M wholesale. It still burnt, but the result was better than the stuff supplied by local timber merrchant. The other problem could be the thickness of material you...

Attaching a top to a unit?!?!?!

You cannot glue or joint a solid oak top to the unit. It will want to expand and contract, pulling itself apart or cupping. Ideally you want slotted holes in the mdf for fixing the oak top to allow for movement. You can get away with this if you drill a couple of 6mm diameter holes along the...

    Starter table saw

You do not mention a budget. I would be looking for something small, 250mm blade, but with a cast iron or aluminium table. I would start my search with Startrite and Scheppach. Colin

    Power Washers

Have I been lucky with my Karcher. I bought it about 10 years ago on offer for about £50 and I've had no problem. Admittedly it only gets used 3 or 4 times a year and when I've finished I turn the water off and leave the trigger open until all water has been blown out of the system. It then...

    Mortice chisels which size

I must admit that my 3/8" stays in the machine for 95% of the time. If I need a wider mortice I tend to set the chisel up off centre and rotate the timber so I've done a run with the face side towards me and away from me. When cutting my tenon cheeks on the bandsaw I then only need to worry...

Some help please - drawer runner issue

I had a similar situation with the Blum Metabox drawer sides a few months ago. With these you buy the sides and fit your own base and back. I had fitted the bottom drawer perfectly and moved up, using a sheet of ply as a spacer for the drawer runners on the carcase, so I knew they should have...

Is it worth trying to repair these Teak chairs?

Just jet wash the black treacle off, cut new bits of teak in and leave. It will go a nice grey and if it is teak could well outlive you without any form of treatment. Colin

    Melamine board

I used to do as you are hoping to. I found an excellent local joinery company when I lived in Essex that made cabinets for school science labs, dental surgeries etc. They would regularly buy in an artic full of mdf board in white, cream and grey finish. They used to dimension to my cutting list...

What can go on top of creosote to mask the smell?

Is creosote any more detrimental to the environment than Tanolised timber or green cuprinol. Don't these have a CCA base, copper, chromium, arsenic? Colin

    Good patio / moss cleaner

The only thing I have ever used on algae, be it on decking, outside walls or now my Devon green patio is bleach and water. 1 part bleach to 4 parts water, spray it on, leave 24 hrs, repeat if needed and then hose of with a broom. It has always worked. Colin

What can go on top of creosote to mask the smell?

I'm not sure if it is illegal to use it, as you may have owned it for many years. I believe you do however have to meet certain criteria to buy it now, of which use on listed buildings is also probably a route to buy it. I'm not sure how to read your comment, "I think you have a problem" Colin

How long should I wait(Machine delivery content)

When I've sold/bought on e-bay it usually requests send out within 3 days and I see no reason why they should be any different. I'd get snotty with them, to the point that you expect a sweetener for the unacceptable delay. Colin
