    Possible drain block issue

We had a similar problem: Our house has two en-suites. One had not been used for some time. We started to get sewage smells. I went around the twist trying to get rid of the smell. In the end I gave in and paid a plumber to come out. After about five minutes he looked in the shower tray and...

The joys of electric car ownership!

We are somewhat similar : Our main reception rooms have no heating aside from wood burners. We have a small area of woodland on our property. All of our wood for the burners comes from our land. So far we have been using logs which the previous owner had cut and left stacked. I've built a...

    Inflation

Although not true for absolutely everything (global food being an example), desire drives up prices : if consumers chose to not buy because of price, suppliers would need to soften prices to sell and prices would drop. The problem is that consumerism drives demand and while people have spare...

    Wrist watch question

I've had a mechanical watches for a lot of years and I wear it day in and day out. Aside from a service every now and again, it has behaved beautifully - and it gets plenty of abuse. The repair cost isn't out of line with top brands who have service centres in the UK. Being repaired back in...

    WiFi extenders

We had an Orbi mesh in our previous house and it behaved well. We moved it to our new place and it was hopeless. Ignoring the incoming speed to the property for one moment, it simply couldn't punch a signal throughout the house on account of the old thick walls. We moved to TP-Link Deco P9's...

Check your dashcam ...especially if it's a Nextbase

Generally, if you buy almost anything and it is replaced under warranty, the warranty continues from the original item purchase date and not from the supply of the replacement. Were it to start again, some consumers would engineer a perpetual warranty and that would be unfair for the supplier.

    Virgin Media Email Issue

I was told that I am one of the few too. That said, I switched my main email across to Goggle about 18 months ago as we were set to move house and would no longer be with VM. I understood that VM give 90 days after you pay your last bill to move all of your mail to a safe place. We moved a year...

    Not so smart meter

I was against having a smart meter for years as I couldn't see the point, especially if it was a SMETS1. About three months ago, partly on the back of some friends having one as well as PV/Battery, I started to see some advantages in having more usage data - especially with the cost of energy...

    Inefficient appliance repair.

The days when most of the components in appliances were discrete and commonly available are long gone. These days, while some brands may share some things, most circuit boards, sensors, cables and assemblies are proprietary. A simple sensor of old may have a supply and a control wire going...

    compressor couplings question

I've just replaced my compressor (having let the previous one go dry and seize - numpty!) - so yes, compressor oil is a must! Make sure you place it where you can see the oil level easily. They can be quite difficult to see. I've had both rubber and coil extension hoses and would never go with...

Axminster Basingstoke due to close because of "dramatically increasing costs"

Having moved into the sticks and seen local traders trying to carve a slice for bread, I do try to support them, within reason. Easily done by somebody like me with some disposable income and a wish to see success. Different matter if customers are struggling to make ends meet and every penny...

Axminster Basingstoke due to close because of "dramatically increasing costs"

That's a shame. I spent many an hour and plenty of pounds in there until we moved. My nearest store now is at Axminster. If that one closes things must be really bad.

Wanted Brush Cutter (Regarding my previous topic: 'Strimmer')

I have a petrol Husqvarna 525. It works well. As to the need for petrol - it all depends upon how much work it needs to do and how far from a 13A socket you are.

    Replacing a DG unit.

Exactly what Deema said. Just take your time. If there is a load of silicone between the glass and frame, use a knife to cut away as much of that as you can before trying to remove the glass. There should be little or no old silicone remaining when you start to put the new unit in.

    Wanted Strimmer

I have a petrol Husqvarna and a harness. I considered battery but we have so much stuff that needs frequent strimming that a battery didn't seem like a viable proposition. It can be a little temperamental to start when cold but, that aside, it works well. For a small area, I would either stay...

    Imperial Spanners and sockets

My suggestion would be to not rush into anything. When my father in law passed away my sister-in-law was really quick at off loading most of his possessions. My wife and her sister didn't resist, thinking that my SIL was grieving, but I was saddened at the speed. Much later my SIL said that...

Axminster Tools Receives the 2023 King's Award for Enterprise for the UJK Parf MK2 Guide System

Having purchased the Parf II and having had the pleasure of meeting Peter and his wife at his home, I fully agree that he is a thoroughly nice chap - in real life he's just like he behaves in his videos. I also remember visiting Axminster Tools with my dad when they still had a shop on the high...

    Replacing a DG unit.

Generally, you measure the rebate in X and Y and subtract 10mm from each. That becomes the dimension of the glass. That said, if the beads are skinny, most units have about 11mm spacer bars around the outside and an associated primary seal. You don't want the primary seal to be exposed as it...

    Heads up.....

Mine went off (on EE). Shame that the voice announcement that I received with it had a distinctly American accent. Surely they could have recorded it using somebody with a British accent?

    Replacement Roof for garage cost?

We had a roof replaced about 25 years agao but cannot remember what the cost was - it would be irrelevant now. More recently we had an asbestos chimney flue replaced with a stainless steel one. We agreed to get a third party to professionally remove the asbestos from our property as this wasn't...
