    Double Glazing or not?

Not sure about that Phil - there are plenty of papers on the internet stating that 12mm is optimal for argon. At one time, and I'm not saying that you were seduced by the salesman, the "bigger is better" approach was sold. I stand by 12mm as the optimal gap. Not that I'm suggesting you need to...

    Double Glazing or not?

Sorry - just seen this so am late to the party. I've been conversing directly with Kieran not realising this thread existed. Most of us know that double glazing units fail because the primary and secondary seals break down over time - generally due to sunlight damage. Triple glazing does add...

    Glazing interior window

That's horrible and must have been so worrying as a parent. The problem with toughened glass is that, if you let it hit a solid object at the wrong angle it breaks, instantly, into very small, but quite sharp cubes, and is rendered useless. There are specifications which dictate how many cubes...

    Cyclone Dust Collection

Generally, Axminster Tools. Expensive but good quality IMHO.

    Glazing interior window

I'd be inclined to get the cracked glass out and then clean up everything in the void. Then I would create a bead on the inside which has a profile and size to hold the glass and cover the primary seal. Now run a line of caulk or low modulus silicone all around the inside of the bead. With a...

    BBC Scaremongering again

.... I thought the BBC had started employing foreign announcers and this was the reason why I couldn't understand what they were saying. I may try listening in again now.

    Glazing interior window

You could bead from both sides. Ideally you need 2 to 5mm air gap between the edge of the glazing unit and the frame of the unit in which you are placing it. The gap needs to prevail on all four sides of the glazing unit. This allows for material expansion and for the bypassing of condensation...

    Glazing interior window

Adjacent to a door or 800mm or less above floor height means that any replacement pane of glass needs to be toughened. Glass type is, indeed, Flemish. A secondary pane wont make much difference from an insulation perspective as, in free air, the ideal gap between the two panes should be about...

    Cyclone Dust Collection

Here's my set up: The input is fed from Peter Parfitt's dust port (so multiple inputs) and the outlet goes to a Numatic NV750. The NV750 is switched on with a wireless remote control. The cyclone is a Dust Commander and the box is home built from MDF. The flexible pipe allows an amount of...

    BBC Scaremongering again

FWIW, I find channel 4, in the main, fairly hopeless as a TV broadcaster. I have a degree of respect for their news and use it, somewhat, as a balance to what I get from the BBC but many of the other shows, I find, to be below average at best. I also find that the station is plastered with...

    BBC Scaremongering again

My wife complains that I store large volumes of gas and, rather too regularly, expel it at bed time. ;)

    BBC Scaremongering again

I agree too, you are spot on. We also have to remember that almost nothing broadcast on a TV set or streamed via a media player is actually free. Viewers either pay a licence fee, a subscription fee or, indirectly, bundled within the cost of the advertising of anything that they buy online or...

    Desktop PC

I used to build my own and had more obsolete junk from old computers stored in my roof than I care to admit to. These days we just buy finished units - I haven't the time or interest to keep up with marching technology. My last two models have come from Chillblast. Not the cheapest but decent...

    Dementia and me.

Although my parents, thankfully, haven't gone that way (mum passed, dad still clinging on but slowing down mentally and physically at 90 years of age), some of what you have said rings true with my mother in law (who died of dementia). It's utterly horrible, especially for those holding things...

    Hi from the midlands

Welcome, with all of those diverse needs, I calculate that you will need a workshop of about 100 square metres, complete with sound proofing, dust proofing, light elimination, power and water :) We'll all look forward to the results. Seriously, don't under estimate how much space woodworking...

Which cordless system are you going with..if any?

When we started our business we used some of the older Ryobi units and have been unhappy with the quality even though the price was OK. The batteries just never lasted and held their charge. I switched to DeWalt and have been happy ever since. We no longer use the tools professionally but I...

    Dust Extract

Not great to come off anything like that at 90 degrees as the suction losses are considerable. Much better to come off with a pair of 45 degree elbows like a chamfer. Anyway, I appreciate that this may not be possible. The general approach is to use a female collar and then connect another...

    Dementia and me.

My mother-in-law went through it and we lost her about six years ago. It was horrible for my father-in-law but, somewhat luckily, he died suddenly long before she did. In all, she struggled through it for about ten years. My wife and I struggle to watch programmes on TV associated with...

    Hello

Welcome, I was in your position about a year ago. One year later and my bank balance is nowhere near as healthy but I am pleased with all of the tools that I never knew I needed.

    Custom MFT top

In my case, I have a general work bench that I built 35 years ago. It isn't massive and doesn't work well with sheet materials. My new bench is bigger and supports modern power tools better. So, I use both types.
