MFT and Rail Square - my thoughts

aaah OK (y) Do you want to sell your hinge? :D

MFT and Rail Square - my thoughts

ok got it. If doing that, why not just have a slightly larger top to being with? Or are you talking about doing a retrospective extension of a standard 718mm MFT? If so then it could be a good route if you need more than 550mm crosscut and don't want to use a a hinge or a rail square Martin

Nope, didn't understand any of that 😅

    Help with insulation choice

Defo don't do that. Either vent it with an air gap, or don't vent it and push the insulation tight against the cold surface / outer skin to reduce / eliminate the air gap as much as possible. You can use a moisture barrier too on the inside if you want to go to town. Nobody is venting the walls...

    Titanium hammers?

I also have tennis elbow but my hammer isnt the issue as I don't use it that much for hammering. Usually for removing nails that I've accidentally fired into the wrong place with the nail gun.

    Titanium hammers?

Yeah the guy I work with has a stilleto and it's absolutely lovely to use. So light and yet still effective. I actually think for £100 it's a pretty good deal as it should last forever (?) and it's cheaper than some of the crazy alternatives that appear to be similar yet £300. If I was getting a...

Mafell KSS60 18v crosscutting saw and OSB.

I have the exact same saw and home made rail. It really irritated me that it didn't come with a side fence Martin

MFT and Rail Square - my thoughts

Yeah I agree, lots of options out there now, and also the hinges are becoming more accessible now with other companies doing their own versions and of course the option to DIY your own. I think the extra setup you mention is my option 2?

    Grass

I quite like Daniel hibbert on YouTube. If it's still draining really bad after the tines etc then you may need drainage underneath the turf, some pea gravel or something. That's a bigger job though.

That's interesting, certainly hadn't thought of that one. Is the faff setting up the hinge not a one time only event though?

MFT and Rail Square - my thoughts

Setup 1s - MFT + Bench dogs 'special' This is a small, and probably very niche, workaround I used today, it allowed me to cross cut at 600mm on my 718mm MFT (normal crosscut capacity 550mm) and yet still line up the rail against the dogs, as opposed to using a rail square for the cuts longer...

MFT and Rail Square - my thoughts

Setup 3 - MFT + Hinge OK so I don't have this setup, but its the standard MFT setup that probably most people are familiar with already. The key differences here (over setup 1) are the hinge adds convenience and speed, and yet the accuracy also stays spot on. Also, and critically in my...

MFT and Rail Square - my thoughts

Setup 2 - MFT + Rail Square + Rail Square dogs This is a setup that I sort of stumbled across quite recently (after my original post on this topic). The embarrassing thing is that I already had the kit for it having bought it at the same time as my rail square and I had sort of forgotten I had...

MFT and Rail Square - my thoughts

Setup 4 - Bench + Rail Square I'm jumping around a bit just because this feels like a more natural order than the order I drew the sketches in. The big differences (over setup 1) here are: Much bigger crosscut capacity (up to 1500mm, but you could do even more) No need for an MFT top with...

MFT and Rail Square - my thoughts

As I mentioned a few posts back, I have been doing a bit more thinking and experimenting with the MFT and as a result I have a slightly improved understanding vs where I was a few weeks ago. I now see that there are a few extra options in terms of what setups you can have with the MFT and I...

MFT and Rail Square - my thoughts

Totally agree on keeping them separate but I don't think I would bother with anything more than blocks to locate it and hold for sideways movements. No need to screw down, it's not going anywhere is it, and then you can simply lift off the top when you want to move it. Martin

Have you tried lifting it yet 😅

MFT and Rail Square - my thoughts

I don't think I have had it long enough to give you a meaningful / accurate answer. But I'll have a go 😅 The mitre saw still rules for convenience, with that blade constantly hovering above the workpiece area, and simply pulled down when you are ready to cut... it can't be beaten for speed...

Levelling my mitre saw with worktop

Is it not possible to just measure the offset and make the mitre table the offset amount lower than your worktop? I've just done exactly this and it seems to have worked out ok. My offset was 159mm.
