First mitre saw, EVO SMS255+ or Bosch GCM8?

I have the gcm8, it's a good saw. Having a bigger saw would be a nice luxury but I would say for only about 5% of the time with my use, which is mainly construction and some hobby. With construction, it is all 50mm thick material pretty much.... 3x2, 4x2, 6x2 etc all you need is an 8 inch saw...

    Modular Workbenches

I'm in a similar boat, just started building benches and storage and its a liberating feeling having your stuff organised and space to work in. Just finished my first french cleat so looking forward to putting stuff on it and seeing how I get on

French cleats - set away from wall

I never thought of that option, and I thought I had considered everything. I probably have another to do so might give your idea a bit more thought. Martin

French cleats - set away from wall

I'm not sure. I might put a shelf above that rail and then put another rail on another wall, one of the white ones.

French cleats - set away from wall

Well the wall cleat is finished. I used 120mm screws driven directly into the studs. I made the spacer at the back 60mm instead of the 30mm used in the prototype because I wanted to get 2 screws into each stud. Overall I'm happyish with it, the concept is good but the led strip doesn't throw...

    Ground screw advice needed please

Yes I'm quite a fan of groundscrews - fast to install, same price or cheaper than concrete, less mess, gives a ventilation gap underneath, good with tree roots. Its not all gold but out of the options it's the one I feel is the best compromise for a 5x3 it would be about £1100 fully installed...

French cleats - set away from wall

It will be your usual affair with chisels, rulers, pens etc maybe some tools and the battery charger etc. Don't know yet. You are right about the light issue, at first I thought it wouldn't matter but now I realise the batten will obstruct the path of the light. Depends how I do the batten...

French cleats - set away from wall

I actually thought about doing the rebate idea on the bottom edge.... the downside is that the light ends up very close to the wall and doesn't distribute as well, but it's still one of the options I'm thinking about. I'm slightly concerned over the small area of the spacer... It's only 30mm...

French cleats - set away from wall

Good idea but I plan on having loads of different hangers, and want to be able to move them around individually to configure the space and evolve it with use.

French cleats - set away from wall

I quite like the weird blue too. Good call on the spacers, that does help as I'm trying to do it with minimal materials as ply is so expensive and also my budget for this stuff has dwindled down close to zero now.

French cleats - set away from wall

I had a little go at a prototype today, it seemed to work ok once I had experimented with the spacings and adjusted them so that the light diffused evenly. I will give this a go and do a full length run and see how I get on. I was using that weird blue colour because it was the one that...

French cleats - set away from wall

its square, just a bad drawing.

French cleats - set away from wall

Great thanks, so the disadvantage to adding the spacer block (to accomodate the lighting) is that I need to add a double ply batten to every 'stuff' hanger, instead of just a single. That's a bit of a pain I suppose, but not a disaster. Martin

French cleats - set away from wall

Ok got it. So if I put two pieces of ply on the bottom of the 'stuff' cleat then it would align with the wall behind it and stop the tipping? Martin

French cleats - set away from wall

Not quite sure I follow you Adam; if it tips outwards then it doesn't work?

French cleats - set away from wall

Does a french cleat system need to be flush to the wall behind it? Can I do this: I am looking to have lighting behind the cleat that spills out onto the wall. I have been looking at building a complicated hexagon shelf system which I mentioned in another thread but I'm also looking at...

What is your pet peeve injury in the workshop?

Tennis elbow... Oh I'll just lift that massively heavy thing, I'll be careful, it won't make it worse...

    That's a really good idea!
