Post a photo of the last thing you made

The book boxes are a neat idea, though they are not dissimilar to some of the "Globe Wernicke" stacking book-cases, They tackle the problem of enclosing the books by having a glass door to the front that slides up and tucks away above the books when in use.

Sowing the First Seeds of 2023

It's always seemed odd that Hydrangeas turn blue under acid conditions, and red for alkali. Which for me is a bit counterintuitive. given that it's the opposite for litmus paper. They don't seem to be able to make up their minds in some soils. Edit @J-G 'S post has just popped up

Not in the workshop at present to sort out a photo. These being D whistles, are turned from a billet 12" long. According to 'Mr Bracker's' guide, my next D whistle will be precisely 295.8mm long. :giggle:

    Tips for threading

A beautiful result. I have an old one of these in my workshop but when it gets damp in the atmosphere, it sticks.🤔

Tool chest, tools cabinet or plane till?

When I moved into my first workshop I made myself a pair of wall cabinets. following a design by 'Alf Martensson' ( now there's a name one doesn't hear mentioned much nowadays) Can't remember where I saw it, but it's a fairly systemised build. I suppose it bridges the gap between a ' plane...

It is the size of the hole that allows you to tune it. So, if you start with under-sized holes, you can ream them out until you hit the note. Make the hole too big and you've wrecked it - unless, of course you start adding fillers.:) I would have to agree about the sound the wood imparts. I find...

It has been a bit of a journey, working out how to make them, especially forming the wooden tubes - which I do on the metalworking lathe. I started out copying one I have in my collection. Which gave me most of the pointers I needed. I've since discovered Hans Bracker's, "Whistle and Flute...

What size drill bit for octagonal Oak dowels.

I believe you're overthinking it  Width of dowel - face to face - will be a tad over hole diameter. They need to be tapered as well so they will fit a way into the hole., before you start to hammer them home. It is best to use riven stock to ensure the grain is straight so that they...

Best paint for a galvanised/slightly rusted metal roof?

Would a bitumen roofing paint be the best bet for roof like this? Relatively cheap and waterproof.

The joys of electric car ownership!

How logical ! Perhaps it could be extended to other goods. :giggle:

The joys of electric car ownership!

Maybe all vehicles should come with their own " end of life" certificates, and be returned to the manufacturer for disposal.

Three more whistles recently finished. Thinner walls than the last lot ( 2.65mm). It has made a bit of a difference to the sound. I'm going to try and be a bit more ordered and accurate with the next lot :giggle: . The first is Blackwood, followed by Pear and Padauk.

    Great Rejoinders

Another Groucho Marx one. When asked whether he and his wife had anything in common, replied " Yes, we were married on the same day"

    Choosing a Bench Grinder

I would use a file, or diamond file to reproduce this detail depending on the hardness of this part of the shaft. Or even an angle grinder.

Poplar supplier near Brighton / Wood choice for face frames

Poplar aka Tulipwood is, easily worked, used to be relatively inexpensive and takes a good paint finish, hence its popularity.

The joys of electric car ownership!

I believe that Lignite, the coal mined in the opencast mines in Germany, is in fact fossilised peat.

The joys of electric car ownership!

Not to digress too much. or take you too literally - but I've often wondered, whether it would actually be possible for something like coal to form again. Given that there are a variety of life forms now that would feed off the vegetation and break it down - before it ever had a chance to become...
