    Political compass

Though, over the years, I believe I have noticed a discernible difference between various members political opinions. No one, who has posted their results, seems to have fully escaped the clutches of the green rectangle. at the bottom left-hand corner. Including myself who is hovering around...

My most horrible food mistake so far...

I remember them as 1/3rd pint bottles. I have a lactose intolerance so being forced to "chug" this down was a nightmare. For folk like me, Margaret Thatcher did something that was actually beneficial . I believe you can still legally buy draught beer in 1/3rd pints - not that I've ever...

Can I make all usual structures with just wood from my small woodland?

Quite specific varieties are grown for basket weaving, so you might need to do a little more research, before you commit to any particular variety.

    Smoking

I don't see any mention of Oxygen coming out of a car exhaust. Quite important if the fumes, however "clean", are your only source of air.

    Resawing tips

I regularly used to buy packs of planed 6x1 to make pine furniture. A friend in the timber trade spotted that the stock was resawn 6x2. It was slightly under thickness, but otherwise performed well. However I've never had much luck doing this myself, for all the reasons mentioned previously...

Can I make all usual structures with just wood from my small woodland?

You should be able to buy your timber as cordwood - which are fairly respectable lengths, prior to it being cut as logs and seasoned.

    Volden coving superglue activator

Thanks for the "heads-up" These CA glue containers have annoyed me for years. Looking it up on the internet, however, seems to show some of the Volden CA glue still being sold in the old style containers. So it might be pot luck which one you end up with. :)

Thoughts on sash window costs & time

When I first started out, all those years ago, a 6' x 4' boxed sash window was £250, This was redwood with a hardwood cill. I reached my pricing by phoning other joinery firms for prices. I was't the cheapest, which was £180, but this didn't have a hardwood cill and was made of whitewood. My...

Advice on buying vintage Wadkin BRA radial arm saw

The bed on the illustrated Wadkin looks to be far too narrow to be of much use other than for setting into an existing bench. or between a run of roller benches. I have to admit that my BRA14, with the more usual sized bench is raised up with concrete blocks under the legs. This gives a better...

    Polish

You have my heartfelt sympathy. This is very sad and devastating thing to happen to a family member, Based on this alone,, my impulse would be to pour the alcohol down the sink. Spirits sold for drinking, are often mixed with water to regulate their strength. Probably better to use something...

    Flood proofing new shed

The consensus seems to be to build it as high off the ground as possible, My own workshop has flooded a few times with flash floods, and the basic observations I would make would be to keep your electrics well off the ground and have everything stored in watertight boxes , that is below waist...

Can I make all usual structures with just wood from my small woodland?

Walden Pond springs to mind... It will at least be a voyage of self discovery. Ben Law, mentioned previously, has managed to build a life based on his woodland so it is possible. Success, however, might well need the cooperation of other " fellow travellers" rather than being a solitary endeavor,

Can I make all usual structures with just wood from my small woodland?

His range of tools don't seem to be precious and artisan but a healthy admixture of old and modern - with a few power tools mixed in there. Lots of ancient building structures rely on partially , or fully digging out the ground and roofing over. Not really advisable in areas of heavy and...

Can I make all usual structures with just wood from my small woodland?

Ben Law's book - Woodland Craft, will be of interest to you. He has some sections on building with round wood, and a list of useful tools in the back. A series of steel wedges is handy as it allows you to split timbers like Ash. An acre of woodland is not a large amount though it should keep you...

    Some mistake, surely?

I find it a lot easier to design furniture in feet and inches. After all "Man is the measure of all things", so designing in in terms of "feet", makes perfect sense, as should "spans" and "hands". It more directly links the objects to us. I also find it a lot easier to work out, and play around...

    Magnifying lens

Also a fan like @Blackswanwood of the head sets with lenses. You can buy them at a fraction of the price on Ebay. The focal length varies with the different magnifications. Not a problem with some things, but if you are operating a lathe, your head might be getting too close to the spinning...

    Wood ID please.

If you look to the likes of "George Ellis" in his book - Modern Practical Joinery, for a list of contemporary hardwoods that were readily available in the early 1900's. there is little mention of African hardwoods and none at all of Iroko, The only one we would recognize from the list. now is...
