    " Pooh Sticks"

This morning I have been playing "Pooh Sticks". However, not the whimsical game of A A Milne's imagining, but a much more earthy version, called - "Unblocking the run to the septic tank". The blockages seem to coincide with heavy , or protracted rainfall. And are invariably at the end of the...

    Spindle moulder tooling

I seem to remember that some spindle moulders allowed you to mount the block at the very top of the spindle, Instead of the nut, there was a large countersunk machine screw that went into the spindle shaft and sat flush in the special euro block. This allows you to pass the work over the cutter...

    Vintage drawing set. . .

Might be worth experimenting with shaped male forms to press the velvet fully home in the profiled cut outs. Looking at my old drawing sets, its amazing, just how intricate some of the cut outs are, and how crease free the velvet is,

    Servicing The Oil-Fired Rayburn

It was a bit like burning money, at times, despite all it's other benefits. After all it did make the kitchen the warm central hub of the house, which we miss. I was contemplating converting it to solid fuel if we are only going to run it over the coldest part of winter. Also one has to bear...

    Servicing The Oil-Fired Rayburn

Yes, we do have the older wick version, which did cause a few problems when the composition of the fuel was changed a few years back. But at least these models are easy to service. It is mainly a case of getting rid of the carbon and changing the wicks.

    Servicing The Oil-Fired Rayburn

Not that Spartan, I'm afraid. We had a heat pump, and solar panels installed earlier in the year and we are just missing that "cozy kitchen vibe".

    Servicing The Oil-Fired Rayburn

Just been sorting out our Rayburn so that we can have it on over the Christmas period. I certainly notice the difference now we don't run it for the majority of the year. No more easy drying of clothes on the rack; no more warm kitchen to come down to in the morning and no more additional oven...

    Prezzion Pizza

I've just clocked that "Raven Forge" make a nice "pizza axe", for a modest £69.99. Yes, you've read it correctly, and , yes it is for cutting your pizza.:giggle:

    Prezzion Pizza

No, I like to keep it simple . I don't use a wood-fired oven, either.

Router bit too large for insert plate

If the OP purchases a 1/4" arbor with interchangeable cutters that can be bolted on after it has been fixed in the router collet , then it will be a lot more convenient to use. You have of course , be mindful you don't put the cutter on upside down.

    Prezzion Pizza

There is a lot to be said for using a pair of scissors. They don't damage the glaze on the plates , or the non-stick coating on the baking sheet, :giggle:

    Vintage drawing set. . .

SNAP! ..................I have the same set as your first one, except I have ivory handled, lining pens in the top compartment. I'm not sure if all my dividers and compasses are the originals , as some have different finials at the top. I do , however have the small multi-tool that came with...

    Upside down doors

It was quite a few years ago now, that I fitted the kitchen, so I can't really comment on their present offerings. The kitchen, then, certainly looked the part. And, I would have been happy with the quality it were one of my own. Which is a moot point really, as I did offer to make the...

    Upside down doors

True, though it would only have been a matter of moments to flip them round as they were easily interchangeable. :giggle:

    Upside down doors

I have to confess, that I too have been guilty of hanging doors upside down .Also when , a site-agent, of having a decorator wallpaper a whole room, with the paper up-side -down. 😲 The doors were on a deVOL kitchen that I installed for a customer. They were a pair of double doors that I was...

Stanley Gas fired Super Star boiler 80,00BTU

If it is anything like the gas fired Aga we used to have it was simply a gas burner that heated a boiler. When our burner degraded and needed replaced. I managed to track it down using a patent number stamped on the side. Strangely enough I ended up speaking to the engineer who designed it. I...

    Another "Which Planer/Thicknesser"

I have an old Elektra Beckum that is still going strong after 30 years. I use it with a pair of rollers when feeding long stock through. Based on this I wouldn't hesitate in recommending the present Metabo HC260. You might be able to get it a bit cheaper. I saw a -New Other- one on Ebay...

Can I do this on a drill press?

The late, Alexander G Weygers in his book " The Modern Blacksmith " has a brief "snippet" with accompanying illustration, about using the drill press as a wood lathe - particularly for turning tool handles.

    Removing hardboard backing

You can easily peel away the hardboard with a chisel - even a fairly blunt one - as it will readily delaminate in layers. This will then leave mostly glue to remove with a scraper or hand plane. If you want to trust the structural integrity of your glued up blocks to your thicknesser. then you...

Turning old farm building into workshop

Good that you are sorted with the pantiles as they can be a bit tricky to match. They were even quite common in London at one point in time. Now, apart from a few green glazed 1930's ones they have largely disappeared, Though one old property I worked on in Greenwich still had them.
