    Plumbing... Ooh, What A Palaver!

The drain clearing aspect was in the end, fairly straightforward. It was the fact that a seemingly unrelated crack in a waste pipe caused water to pour everywhere. I get that it only came to light whilst I was clearing the pipe - but why should it have failed ? I've kept the section of pipe...

    Plumbing... Ooh, What A Palaver!

Well Saturday started out as any other day. Except that my partner greeted me at breakfast with the news that the kitchen sink was blocked. Not a major problem, but it meant a small delay to my spending a day in the workshop. No luck with the plunger, and from a further inspection,it appeared...

MPs vote in favour of assisted dying bill

I have to admit, that I am not exactly sure, what my feelings are, on this issue. Suicide, I have always thought of as something that is inevitable.Especially if a person has both the desire and the means to end their life. I can see the logic in the argument - " It's my body and my life. and I...

Can't help thinking that the last great taboo has been overturned. And our world will never quite be the same again.

    Trump tariffs & tool prices

You could well be correct, and it is too little, too late. It is said that trade is war under another guise. And , China has fought a faultless campaign. I remember a friend telling me, well over 30 years ago, about being approached at trade fair, by Chinese, offering to make all his products...

    Trump tariffs & tool prices

Attractive as it is, at some point all these cheap imports from China will have to stop. If allowed to go on unchecked they will gradually hollow out all the production facilities in America and Europe. Free-trade is treated like some holy writ, whereas it also has its bad sides as well as its...

    Ring maker drill bit set?

Not used these, though I have seen them advertised before. At this price it might be worth a punt. You could then post a review to aid anyone thinking along the same lines. :giggle: My only reservation is the short grain, though this isn't too much of a problem with curtain rings. A sounder...

    Five favourite quotes.

William Blake - " If a fool persists in his folly, he will become wise"... This has always struck me as being open to two different interpretations Either the fool eventually realises his folly and becomes wise, or, his folly is perceived as the new wisdom.

    Yacht varnish indoors?

I believe that yacht varnish is mainly comprised of Alkyd Resin, which is the same binder used in standard, oil based, house paints.

Doesn't Happen To Be My Day

We also get any number of those mini ones, no more than a few minutes at a time. Which is probably things being switched rather than cuts proper. The dread is to run out of oil over Christmas, and, also have a power-cut. We should be able to cobble together Christmas dinner on the old fire place...

Doesn't Happen To Be My Day

I had every intention of spending all of today, in the workshop. After a protracted absence. I needed to start clearing the decks, prior to the start of my next small project. However, Murphy's law came into action at 6 pm this morning, when I tried to turn on the bedroom light and it didn't...

    Mending a Table Knife

Well, to state the obvious - it hasn't. Plaster of Paris is. in fact, one of the accepted ways of fixing knife tangs into hollow handles especially silver ware. along with blends of pitch or rosin. You can get more resilient and harder versions such as dental plaster ( Crystacal) This might...

    Mending a Table Knife

The plaster could well be something like Plaster of Paris with the tang on the blade poked into it until it sets The dimple on the round tang should then stop the blade easily pulling out. I seem to remember repairing something fitted into a similar handle, though this was filled with a sort of...

What's going on with these here mortice chisels?

They have a deep single spur and point on the auger. By contrast, the Ridgeway ones have two shallow spurs and a very small point The geometry of the twin helix that clears the swarf is more regular on the Ridgeway ones. The Asian style ones, including those made in Taiwan and China have a...

What's going on with these here mortice chisels?

They are supplied oversized and have to be cut down to suit your machine which is a simple enough task, When I got my Sedgwick morticer I also had an additional two collets made to accommodate the different diameters of chisels I already had, which greatly broadens ones options.
