    Age of Oak wood.

Oak is one of those timbers, along with Redwood and Fir that has been continuously imported, from the continent over the centuries. The chief sources were once from ports such as Danzig and Riga. Therefore one cannot guarantee that it is necessarily home grown. In fact if it is nice straight...

    Which Timber

Out of the three timbers listed, larch would be my best bet. It is more durable before any sort of treatment than the others.

Workshop space within an uninsulated Barn

It is most likely to be the lime content. I believe lime -wash was used to inhibit rust on ironwork.

    To wood Lathe

Hi there. yes it is simply fitted into the tool post and bolted in position as you would say a boring bar, but protrudes enough to form a rest for a hand held wood turning tool. You can obviously adjust its position with the cross slide and carriage , before locking them firmly in place.

    To wood Lathe

I presume you mean for freehand work, otherwise you can proceed as you do with metal. Just use the appropriate cutters in the tool post. Those for aluminium are good as well as the special profiles you can grind yourself. For freehand work I have a section of 12mm square bar that I fix in the...

Workshop space within an uninsulated Barn

I've previously had two large unheated workshops, both on a farm in Kent. One was a cow shed and the other an old milking parlour. My kids at the time would always joke that it was colder in my workshop, than outside - even on a winters day. Fast forward to now and I have a nice well...

    Copper clad worktops?

" Le Zinc" is the term usually used, but I believe pewter tops are also included under this general description. ..

    THE FOURTH OF JULY

Well the fourth is upon us.... I for one have done my civic duty and voted. Soon it will be all over ( bar the shouting) - until next time. :giggle:

Advice about best tool to use for project

Perhaps a reamer would help with widening the holes .

    Copper clad worktops?

Unless it is a skill set you wish to acquire. or a very simple run, with no rounded corners. It might be best to buy it in. I soon found with making kitchens that it became increasingly more expedient to buy in the worktops rather than make them myself, however much I enjoyed the challenge...

    Veneer edges

It also falls in that " too risky to attempt " category. One always wants to try and help the customer out, but if you can't do a seamless repair that ties in with the blemish free surface,, characteristic of modern furniture , then you could easily find yourself with an unhappy customer -...

    Prepping for a new start

A woodworking friend, would always remark on the " melancholy of things completed " - I can't say that I notice this much as I always seem to have another project lined up, that I'm moving on to - even if it's still largely in my head. :giggle:

    Model Workshop Sander Thicknesser

Well done ! ... it looks to be a more robust and advanced improvement on the likes of Stewmac's - "Luthiers Friend Sanding Station". By the way, how do you control the thickness?

Looking for brass or bronze carriage bolts & nuts...

Boat Suppliers- some in America are selling silicon bronze bolts #10 which I believe are 3/16" - though I could be wrong, The minimum length however is 1 1/2" - 2". One of the firms I looked at is" Fawcett Boat Supplies"

Temu carbide tip tools - any opinions?

I don't have any experience buying from Temu but the prices are certainly attractive. You would pay for a single tool on ebay what you would pay for a set on Temu. And they look to have come from the same stable. Might be worth a punt as the carbide tip is what does the work and these are easy...

A quick tip for sanding in tightly curved spots...

Nifty idea... But, it does beg the question "What is the purpose of drill blank sets"? ( and supplied in a case as well ) After all, unless one has the specialist grinding equipment, one isn't going to be able to make drill bits out of them.

    Vevor tools

At about £5/£6 a chisel you can't really expect much. The worth of a turning chisel rests firmly in the quality of steel used. I might, however, risk trying out their carbide tipped ones, where one isn't relying on the steel to do the cutting. As for the Vevor label itself, they seem to be...

    Old nails

You can use a hole-saw improvised from a narrow section of steel tube to cut around the outside of the nails. This should allow you to remove them neatly. The holes can then be filled with oak plugs. Edit. I've just 'clocked' that Ebay are selling very narrow diameter hole-saws for making...
