I would agree. I have a Warco 8x4 disc/belt one. Generic Chinese machine. Only thing wrong with it was the very flimsy bracket for adjusting the angle of the disc table, took me about half an hour to fabricate something more suitable.

I am guessing the reason is that the premium ones are generally pretty stiff, and you have to try quite hard to alter the reading appreciably by thumb pressure. Cheap ones are often made of plastic and bend easily, the knurled wheel is pretty useful on these.

That's what the wheel is for on calipers, to regulate the pressure applied.

Mild steel will bend very readily in the dimensions you give. It would need to be heat treated in some way to make it stiffer, which means starting with a higher carbon steel.

And of course Horizon still in use, with a multi million pound contract recently signed to further extend it. And they also have billions in contracts with other gov depts. Laughable really.
