Why can't I flatten the back of my mortice chisel?

I am with Jacob on this one. Whole sheet on a suitable glass or other flat surface. Wet the plate and the paper will stick to it perfectly flat, then wet the paper and off you go. Less likely to roll if you just draw it towards you, rather than pushing to and fro. Personally I use two hands, a...

    Stopcock or Gate Valve?

Vehicle central locking and many other systems, often heater controls, work by vacuum provided by the engine. They have quite large storage vessels/accumulators to maintain vacuum when the engine isn't running. Particular favourite with Mercedes, and can be a royal PITA :)

    Tensegrity table

Very ingenious, my only observation would be that you might try the alternative links below for a slightly neater appearance, they come in various finishes to match the chain :)

    axminster M950 lathe

The little Unimat lathes do those sort of speeds, don't know of anyone that uses one for this though.

    Steel beam size question

I did exactly what Pete described some years ago. In my case the constraint being money, or a lack of it! I built one half as a pent roof, then later added the other half so ended up with a large span shallow pitch with the joists supported on the centre wall.

    Steel beam size question

For such a shallow pitch you may as well just go for a flat roof, much easier to construct. If you don't like the look you can put a false gable on the end, to get the appearance as your drawing.

    Steel beam size question

Not really necessary to have a flow as such to ensure proper ventilation of the gap. your cladding will allow air to circulate.

    Steel beam size question

Also a little confused why you have doubled up the top beams on the walls? Single will be more than up to the job. And the double battening of the walls for your cladding. If you put horizontal battens straight on, over the membrane there is your airgap. Is there any specific reason for wanting...

    Steel beam size question

My concern would be that with such a shallow pitch I'm not convinced your central roof beam will be strong enough to not sag, and lead to the roof flattening over time and the walls splaying. Has anyone done any calculations for you to confirm this will be sufficient? My very similar workshop...

    Straightening a twisted frame

I have two sets of bifold doors on my workshop, spanning 12 feet. Each door roughly 3 feet wide by 7 foot high. I used 4x2, but with the 2 inch being the thickness. Glued Bridle joints on all corners and dowelled cross pieces. Each frame glued and clamped between two sheets of 1/2 WBP ply, and...

Can't find the water valve in the street. Any ideas?

Site obviously doesn't like stop c***s so you get puffins instead. Gave me a grin.

Can't find the water valve in the street. Any ideas?

Old stop cocks often drip for a bit when disturbed. Both mine and my dad's do this. I just leave a jug under it when turned back on, after a few hours it has stopped, and maybe an egg cup full of water in the jug.

Can't find the water valve in the street. Any ideas?

Not just in Scotland, mines the same. The stop cock at the top of my drive cuts off the next three houses in the road as well!

Kinda spire nut to go over ply?

Thanks for the tip, have just ordered one.

Kinda spire nut to go over ply?

Wow, did someone get out of bed on the wrong side this morning?

Kinda spire nut to go over ply?

Rivnuts might work. I would try inserting them with some epoxy glue, rather than using the setting tool. If you insert them so the shoulder is at the back of the panel I can't see why they wouldn't work. They come in various lengths, so just choose a size that suits the thickness of the ply.

Advice re. replacement pillar drill table

Sorry, I see now that the table is missing altogether. I would either look around local auction houses, you would be surprised how little old rusty machines fetch. You may well be able to find something with a table that could be adapted.for very little. You could also try local scrap metal...
