    Car alternator on/off limits

Only thing I would add if if testing at the battery terminals then if you get low readings, repeat connecting directly to the alternator. If you get the same then there is a problem with it. If you get different figures then check the wiring between the two, particularly the earth.

How much weight can a screw thread hold?

316 isn't actually very strong compared to high tensile steel, which will also be much cheaper. Not sure where you will get one as elegant as the one in the picture though ! In terms of a straight pull I would imagine it would hold in hardwood, swinging about on it is another matter. Personally...

Wood burning stoves tested to destruction

Couldn't help a wince watching the video. The cast iron one they drop it on is very similar to the one in our front room ! We also have one made from a gas bottle on the patio. Surprisingly effective, and pretty cheap. Do like the design though, as Jacob says the shape actually makes much more...

What do they call this and where might I buy one?

If they are the type that are bolted in then to be honest I would remove them and take to a sand blaster. Most will blast and prime at quite reasonable cost. Much less faff. If immovable then a needle scaler is definitely worth a try.

What do they call this and where might I buy one?

Aluminium oxide, or if you had a big compressor, copper slag. Both will last a lot longer than sand. Still need proper PPE.

    Labour's Employment Rights Bill

Fair enough re the push sticks, I am certainly with you on that one, but still perhaps an unfortunate choice of knight to be wielding them :-)

    Labour's Employment Rights Bill

I have always found it rather amusing that Jacob should use an image of a Knight Templar as his avatar. The organisation as a whole were arguably the world's earliest bankers in the modern sense, and became fabulously wealthy on the back of the crusades. The archetypal capitalists. The military...

    Labour's Employment Rights Bill

You really can't stop yourself can you Jacob. I was perfectly well aware that slave owners were compensated. My point was that this was out of political necessity in order to get the legislation passed, a point of which I am quite sure you are aware, but chose to ignore. Best estimates are that...

    US Election November 5th

In fairness I had to visit Clacton recently, and was pleasantly surprised, big improvement over the s**t h**e it was twenty years ago. I would send them to Rhyl.

    Speed Limit

I think dear old Jacob has a kind of left wing welding helmet. Anything appears in front of him that doesn't accord with his own view of the world and the screen goes black.

    Sharpening drills

Sounds very like my dad. I think I was a bit of a disappointment to him as I never really got the hang of it. Pretty good at lathe tools but I could never sharpen a drill to his standards. So I fear I too am a wastrel like Phil, although my cut off is probably about 3mm :-)

    Speed Limit

I suspect the reality is that these idiots will have no problem continuing to kill people even within the speed limit. They will still drive like complete t**ts. What is needed is more traffic police to monitor our roads, and stiffer sentences for those who do behave in this way. Ask yourself...

    Labour's Employment Rights Bill

Of course Thatcher introduced some ghastly, undemocratic, union bashing legislation. Like the idea that ballots should be properly organised and anonymous, rather than a show of hands in a field, and a host of other dreadful stuff. Cannot for the life of me imagine why she thought it would be a...

    Labour's Employment Rights Bill

Perhaps you could point out where in my post I have sought to whitewash slavery? Slavery is an issue that has blighted humanity for probably our entire existence. Every ancient civilisation used slaves, indeed the practice was so widespread that you would have to conclude it was an ingrained...

    Labour's Employment Rights Bill

Oh Jacob you do love your sweeping generalisations. There were many who could hardly be viewed as reformers who invested vast sums of money to the benefit of their fellow citizens. Take Mr Colston, who's statue ended up in the harbour. Yes he made much of his money through slavery, but in his...

Mine AND her clothes in ONE suitcase, now that is a joke.

    Labour's Employment Rights Bill

One incident I found particularly funny was where they had identified a fault in a particular batch of gearboxes. They had the effected cars, Rover P6 if I remember correctly, put in a compound, and a team from BW went up and changed the faulty boxes for new ones. When the job was finished...

    Labour's Employment Rights Bill

Oh please! Practices like demarcation were rife, how do you justify that. A colleague worked at Longbridge as a welder. He said to get the tips changed on the machine could take half a shift if they were being bloody minded. First you had to get someone from one union to shut the machine down...

Electric Multi Function Tools the cheaper ones and Gas Central Heating Boilers

If you can find a local supplier of car paint, they generally sell all the stuff to go with it. Filler spreaders, basically thin sheets of springy steel with a plastic edge on one side as a handle. They come in various sizes and very cheap. A few strokes on a stone and you can get a sharp edge...
