    Electric vehicles

I agree there is likely to be nothing amiss after a year, I hadn't suggested that. But just looking through the holes in the wheels or from underneath really doesn't cut it for a proper examination. Might be justifiable as a quick check when the car has gone in for an oil change or similar, but...

    New Diesel & Petrol Ban

Will Self summed it up rather well on Question time a few years ago. His view was we get the politicians we deserve. We moan when they lie to us, but if they tell us the truth we won't vote for them. Very true unfortunately.

    New Diesel & Petrol Ban

This really annoys me. Anyone who is vetted will have signed numerous documents, the essence of which is "keep your mouth shut about what you do". I cannot help but think of the employees of places like Bletchley Park who kept their wartime activities a secret for decades, and in many cases...

    New Diesel & Petrol Ban

Hypnotic Chimera. Firstly the idea that vetting guarantees someone's integrity is frankly laughable. Kim Philby was one of the most highly vetted people alive, being groomed to be the head of MI6. He had been a KGB spy for over 30 years. There are many other examples. Not any suggestion that...

My point was they ought to be examined to ensure that they have not suffered any degredation due to age not just wear, exactly as your independent has done. The fact that the main dealer hasn't got a clue doesn't surprise me, most haven't. The issue is that the friction material is glued to the...

Another trick was to put some petrol in the tank, used to stop the diesel waxing. Not too much, or you would blow it up :-)

Worth checking what the manufacturer says about changing pads. They may have a life expectancy in terms of time as well. So even if not worn out, if they are several years old it may be advisable to change them. Sometimes the backing plates can corrode, potentially causing the friction material...

Anyone used a Planex wall / ceiling sander ?

Telescopic props some of the most useful things I have bought, make it so much easier.

Have you got a link to the Compas findings. Looked all over their site and can't find any mention of it.

I think one of the problems in the past was those who arrived in the backs of lorries, for example, and then just vanished without ever making a claim for asylum. They were undoubtedly illegal immigrants. Far fewer now as the traditional routes have largely been closed down, leaving the boats...

Good point. The average chief constable for example earns the same or more than the PM, which does seem daft. Not that they don't have their issues too :-)

First stick welds, advice? 2.5mm mild steel, quite thin e6013 electrodes, 50 amps. Why would they be ‘bad welds’ and what do I look for in welds?

Can be a good idea when you first start to cut them in half. You can remove the flux coating to make the end for the torch by just squeezing it between the jaws of a pair of pliers. Have both hands on the torch, if you haven't got one get an auto darkening helmet. Cheap nowadays, even seen them...

    The things you find out....

When my wife was heavily pregnant with our daughter my son, then 5, told her, "Daddy's getting you a present for when the baby comes". Oh, what is it? "Not allowed to tell you, it's a secret". Ok, what's it start with? "A Wuh". She never did work it out, and was delighted with the rocking chair.

I would think the reason a total ban will never happen is because as long as is left to MP's to decide, then they are about as likely to vote for it as turkeys for Christmas. They are looking at it now apparently. Great opportunity for them all to take notice of public opinion and just stop it...

Couldn't agree more regarding social media in general. God help the current generation who it seems are glued to it constantly. Some seriously weird stuff out there, and seriously unpleasant individuals who somehow attract a massive following. Worrying to think that it is this sort of thing...

Don't agree with many of his views, but I will say this for Corbyn, I very much doubt you would see him topping the leaderboard for gratuities, whatever his position.

It is the overtly partisan views that annoy me. Triton goes to town on Cleverly for accepting hospitality at Wimbledon, quite rightly so. The question as to what this could possibly have to do with his official duties is also a fair point, the answer being nothing whatsoever. But what is sauce...

Funny the link to Ian Hislop, did you actually watch it? Bearing in mind that his conclusion is that the donors are generally from the sectors you would expect, gambling etc. And their motivation is exactly what you would think it to be, ie to buy influence. Rather contradicts your point of...

    Axminster AWVFS trouble

A Helicoil would fix it easily, if you know the thread. I'm guessing M4 or 5? The kits are pretty cheap nowadays M5 £15 in Machine Mart. If you are not familiar with them it enables you to recut the thread slightly oversize and fit a threaded stainless insert that restores it to the original...
