Damaged 60 1/2 block plane thread - replacement?!

I think chai latte is correct, it looks as though they are different threads simply because, although the pitch may be similar or the same the different diameters make it appear different. From my point of view, if I have the parts in front of me then replicating them is easy. I don't really...

Damaged 60 1/2 block plane thread - replacement?!

If you really get stuck then pm me. I will happily make one for you. I would need the other part as well. Looking at the state of the thread on the rod, not sure I share your optimism that it will clean up ok. I suspect that would probably need doing as well :-)

Damaged 60 1/2 block plane thread - replacement?!

Fair point re the helix. But I am with you on the function, seems a strange idea that to move the blade you would be undoing the rod from it's fixing in the base. And as you say the two parts won't move relative to one another. No doubt it will make sense if we can see it in situ.

Damaged 60 1/2 block plane thread - replacement?!

I think your best bet is going to be to find someone with a suitable lathe to make a new one. Maybe a post in general metal working? If there is someone near to you it would be easy to make a new one, anyone having the machine will also probably have the means to identify the thread. Or a local...

Damaged 60 1/2 block plane thread - replacement?!

I was looking at the angle of the threads. Those at the lower end appear to be at a different angle to those at the top, implying a coarser pitch. Doesn't help that it is at an angle. Be interesting to see the full set up. Can't really get my head around how it works. But with potentially two...

    Interior drill holes

I have just got one of these mini ones from Aim Tools in Luton. Saves me going in the shed as it's about a foot high, small enough to sit on my desk. Mine is supposedly a refurbished return and was half price, £36! But came wrapped in the box with all the bits and pieces like new. High speed...

    Electric vehicles

This was slightly different in that it used a small heater, fuelled from the tank. So no engine running. On a similar note one of my friends lectures in Dubai. When he first went over there he couldn't understand why all his students would be getting their phones out 20min before the end of the...

I can well believe it. When my wife's BMW had to have some work done, replacing the suspension bushes on the rear axle on an E28. Pig of a job. I got the parts from them and did it myself. The labour rate then was £100/hr. I had asked as I knew from past experience that it was a awkward job...

Definitely look after the ears, once it's gone it's gone. Wish I had years ago.

    Home made turning tools

For scrapers old industrial hacksaw blades are good. If you can find a local firm that uses them they will often give you one or two old worn out ones for nothing. Also make good parting off tools.

Damaged 60 1/2 block plane thread - replacement?!

Good observation. I hadn't looked closely enough at the picture. As you say it does look as though the bottom is smaller, and with a coarser pitch than the top. How odd.

    New Diesel & Petrol Ban

Always wondered how they sealed the telescoping sections of them. I assume they were lifted by the pressure of the gas, in which case, given the size and weight of the things, it must have been a fair bit of pressure.

    Keir Starmer

I remember seeing an interview with Warren Mitchell. He was talking about the number of people who would congratulate him on the Alf Garnet character and his racist views. They were too stupid to realise that it was actually a caricature of themselves. The blood donor sketch is one of the best...

Damaged 60 1/2 block plane thread - replacement?!

If you know the thread just search for knurled head screw. Easy if it's metric, not so much if imperial. What state is the thread it screws into? Alternatively get a new bolt or screw with sufficient thread and just cut off the threaded part of the original, drill a suitable sized hole in the...

    Farm Boy

Nice work. Out of interest how did you approach the silver soldering? I have found that for fiddly jobs like this the paste is really good, although how they justify the price is beyond me. And just being nosy how do you find the lathe, guessing a Warco from the colour? I am a big fan of big...

    New Diesel & Petrol Ban

Yes, interesting that in the entire rambling post that follows he doesn't share the nature of his "explicit understanding of the reasons why those in the public sector should not accept gifts". Nor does he offer any explanation as to why, whatever those reasons might be, they don't apply...

    Electric vehicles

A lot of German makers used to offer a fuel burning heater as an extra. You could set it to come on maybe 20 mins before you wanted to use he car and it heated up the coolant and circulated it, so when you got in it was warmed up and defrosted. Last one I had was on an S class I think. Really good.

Well we will have to agree to disagree. One point I would make, because it is important is that you really should not be putting a pressure washer directly over your brake calipers. You are very likely to actually inject water under the seals, not a good idea. And you will certainly remove any...
