Plunge saw - battery or corded?

Just a note of caution re the excel rails; as mentioned in another thread, the 700mm Excel rails are a different pattern to the 1500mm. The longer rails are a clone of the Makita-pattern, the shorter ones are more like the Einhell/ older Parkside, and while they will join together they‘re not a...

Track saw rails . . . which one works for my saw?

I showed how to make an 8’ rail from MDF in the tracksaw workshop set of videos, basically just a version of the sawboard many of us made and used pre-tracksaw. You could go all-in and add a replaceable splinterguard, grippy strips etc… but the basic board worked well. Hilariously, I made the...

Track saw rails . . . which one works for my saw?

I believe the 2x700 rails are a different pattern - more like the Parkside/Einhell saw that the Excel saw is based around, so not a straightforward fit as the left-side t-track on the regular rails is a c-shaped channel on the Parkside pattern.

Track saw rails . . . which one works for my saw?

The MacAllister is a dead ringer for the Makita-pattern rail - my ‘which rails…’ vid pre-dates the Big Mac - complete with the annoying anti-tipping lip. The excel 1.5m rail - Excel guiderail, Excel 1.5m Aluminium Guide Rail for Makita and Festool Plunge Saw - are the ones you want. Excel rails...

    Cutting on worktop/ blade clearance

I’ve been routing a sacrificial strip into my MFT tops for years; saves on the wear and tear, easy and cheap to replace. For other cuts I use 6mm spoiler boards - usually MDF offcuts as I have plenty, but almost anything would do, corrugated cardboard, old Amazon boxes etc… Benchdogs make bench...

Aldi bandsaw - got a dodgy one or are they all poo?

The supplied blade in my one was woeful. Changing to a better - tuffsaws - blade made all the difference. It will take a 1/2” blade, but it’s a tight squeeze. I’d stick with 3/8” unless you really need 1/2”. 👍

You Tube vids - Actually making something, like furniture

Trouble is that making furniture or other ‘build’ type videos is generally time consuming, relatively expensive to do, and the videos end up longer which doesn’t always play well with the audience or the algorithm - while everyone *says* they want to watch a build video, very few folks actually...

    Making do without a Domino

Just FYI they’ve been publicly available since Christmas, and the second version was released publicly a couple of weeks ago. 👍

    Cupboard shelf attachment

Rows of holes on 32mm centres have been a staple of the fitted furniture business for decades, and there are plenty of jigs around that help with that; I used one very similar to this for years and it worked fine; be aware that some of the cheaper ones come with a 1/4” drill bit, not 5mm...

Spray kit recommendations ( walls and cabinets )

I just stopped spraying - wasn‘t doing that kind of work any more. 🤷‍♂️👍

Spray kit recommendations ( walls and cabinets )

It was great when it was working, but just not reliable enough.

MDF Identification, finishing and knob/hinge recomendations?

It’ll be a flame retardant or ‘fire rated’ MDF - usually has a pink dye added for easy ID, the same way MR has green. You can get 30 minute and 60 minute vatiants. I’ve only ever painted it with a water-based acrylic, worked well. HTH P

    New MFT 'square' from Benchdogs

The huge benefit of a hinged rail is that you just lift it up and you get your bench back; if it was hinged at the front - and yes, Ï think it would be possible, with some work - the rail would be up in the air at the front of the bench, so smack in the way. And as mentioned above, you still...

    New MFT 'square' from Benchdogs

😂 It's not like I'm the only person with an MFT against a wall, though! As I understand it the Benchdogs hinge will work with a regular MFT - you'd need to drill the holes for the quad connectors, but there's a template for that. And there has to be a certain amount of rail overhang - deepest...

    New MFT 'square' from Benchdogs

The fence extension is 9mm high, the plate the hinge sits on is 6mm. You can use the hinge without the fence extension, but not the plate! 👍

    New MFT 'square' from Benchdogs

Yes, as does the Benchdogs fence. For a deeper crosscut you can always turn the MFT top ’portrait’ instead of ‘landscape’, but yes, the reduced capacity in ‘normal’ landscape orientation is also something I’ll be looking at closely. 👍

    New MFT 'square' from Benchdogs

Yes, that’s something I’ll be looking at. My understanding is that the minimum rail height is 6mm off the surface as the hinge is surface mounted. If you wanted to cut something thinner than that, then a 6mm spoilerboard to pack out the height would be an easy solution. Also forgot to mention...

    New MFT 'square' from Benchdogs

Couple of general comments. It’s a rail hinge, not a square, and the Benchdogs video is a demo of a prototype in raw aluminium; the finished item will be anodised with all the usual laser etching etc… Pricing at £192 inc VAT and delivered it sits squarely between the pressed steel Festool OEM...

    Festool track clamp.

Very neat, and if it works, it works! 👌 But just to clarify, on the original Dave Stanton design - and the ones I made after my chat with him - the wedge pulls the edge of the rail tight against the Benchdogs. 👍

    Looking for a track saw

Thanks. All my tracksaw-related videos are in a playlist here - TW P1; What's a tracksaw & why use one? [video #277] If the OP is new to tracksaws generally, it’s probably worth taking a look at the tracksaw workshop series as it takes you through the whole process from unboxing to getting up &...
