    Kapex Information

Because that's the maximum depth of cut using the normal fence. At the risk of teaching granny to suck eggs.... The fence and base is in green, the blade blue, the material brown-ish. Over-emphasised to make the point, obviously, but in the left-hand image you can see the blade has to have an...

    Alcove shelf

They always are ;) You can either plane the batten in, or just let them follow the shape of the wall. Oh, and always get the shelves level. Cheers, Pete

    Alcove shelf

Couple of 'top tips'. If you make the rear batten the full width of the alcove, then you can butt the side battens up to the rear and clamp them in place - makes it easier to level up and drill though the sides. And if you're doing more than one in an alcove, work out the spacing and make...

Buy Festool Rotex RO 150, Mirka Deros or Metabo SXE 450 Turb

There's also the (relatively) new brushless Festool ETS EC 150 / 3 and /5 - nice sanders, some say they give the Mirka a run for its money in terms of size and weight. FWIW I have the older Festool ETS 150/5 and the 150/3, and the /5 gets far and away the most use. Also have the Rotexes, and...

    Kapex Information

You seem determined to argue 'spec sheet stats' with people who own this saw and have made these cuts. Yes, the spec says 120mm max cut on thinner material e.g. skirting, but the limiting factor with thicker stock is really the boss securing the blade; there's a little over 100mm of blade...

Pretty sure you're quoting specs for the Kapex 88 there, not the Kapex 120. Pete

    which electric nailer/pinner?

"Spend more" probably isn't the suggestion you want, but I've never found any electric pin/brad gun to match the Maestri nailer/stapler, or Spotnails own ME/30 equivalent (21g); both well north of £100 though... IMHO you should ignore anything made by Tacwise. HTH Pete

    Silverline Brad nailer?

I have the Silverline 16ga air nailer (next step up from a typical 18ga brad nailer) and although it's a bit 'cheap & cheerful' it works fine and I've had no problems with it at all from my occasional usage. For the 20-odd quid it cost it's ridiculously good, though if I was using it daily then...

    Another Mac question

Not teaching granny to suck eggs, I hope, but the screensaver settings are found at System Preferences > Desktop & Screen Saver > Screen Saver tab > choose an option from the left-hand pane, and select a “start after…” time from the menu at the bottom. Not sure why USB would interfere with...

    Some large wardrobes!

Special order or custom made ;) Nice job. Haven't used Movento runners, will give them a try next job. Cheers, Pete

    Fireworks poll

They were called 'rip-raps' where I grew up (Liverpool) and I love fireworks, am proud to have taught my children how to use them responsibly!

    Questions Regarding MDF vs MR-MDF

The other grey primer I'd used was the Rustins, and there's also a Dulux one I'd forgotten about. No, the older oil-based F&B eggshell was quite a Matt finish, but the currently available water-based eggshells are a nice mid-sheen - though as I mentioned further up, the small investment in a...

    Questions Regarding MDF vs MR-MDF

12mm, but not much to choose between them - more a question of how much relief you want the panels to have against the wall, I think. Yes. Haven't used Johnsons specifically, but no reason why it shouldn't be; why not buy a small pot and try it? Zinder is very good but it's a more of a...

    Questions Regarding MDF vs MR-MDF

I'd always recommend MR MDF over regular MDF simply because it's a much better quality board for little extra money. Assuming your walls are dry enough (easy and cheap to find out, simple moisture meter for a tenner on eBay) then a 12mm MR MDF board at the size you state, primed all round and...

Photographers - is this a late April 1st joke?

It's long been the case that property needed a 'release' if it featured prominently in photography that was being used commercially - I stopped shooting professionally in late '99/early 2000 and it had been a 'known' issue for a few years by then. I'd imagine this is an extension of that i.e...

    alcove wardrobe Qs

Hello & welcome. I did an old thread here that, whilst about workflow, covered the building of some alcove cabinets and wardrobes, which may be of some use. I do quite a lot of this kind of thing, and carcasses to be painted are always MR MDF, usually 18mm; 1140mm is quite a wide span for a...

When did the world go mad for Festool?

Whilst I don't disagree with what most people say here about the MFT3, I do have the older MFT 1080 and wouldn't want to be without it, personally. It's workshop-based (too heavy and clunky to move around conveniently, and too big for most of the houses I work in - like Chippy above and many...

    4ft x 8ft workbench

Great space. I'd kill to have an 8x4 assembly table, but I'd agree with the others - probably a bit big for a workbench. FWIW my benches are mostly ~850mm deep - all are against walls though, so were designed with the back 100/150mm to hold the clutter ;) Pete

    free standing cabinet advice please

1/ MR MDF, always, with (in ascending preference) Dominos, biscuits or dowels for alignment, plus screws and glue. 2/ 1320mm is a wide span - assume any shelf will need some kind of lipping on the front edge, and possibly a length of metal angle in there as well, depending on proposed loads...
