    BANDSAW HELP !!!

Just a quick heads-up, but I’m getting more than a few comments from people about this year’s Aldi bandsaw not being all that great in the quality control dept. A few people have had problems with the blade staying on the bottom wheel, so if that happens to you I’d chuck it back to Aldi for...

    Camera recommendations

I’ve had (still do!) a few Panasonic LUMIX cameras and they’ve all been good optically and electronically. The OP may be surprised at how far smartphone cameras have moved on in the 6 generations since the Galaxy S4, though, and I only travel with a smartphone camera these days. One thing that...

N00b - Checking in, saying hi and a question about podcasts

Delighted to hear that we rank as high as ‘pretty good’ ;) Not sure if you were after UK-based podcasts specifically, or just woodworker/maker podcasts in general, but we recommended some early on in the first series of the Measuring Up podcast :- Protractor Making it Fools with Tools The shop...

Evolution saw guide / Ryobi R18CS7-0

I have some of the Evolution guide rails - they’re identical to the Festool-pattern, but with two downward-facing t-tracks under the ribs, instead of the one up/one down that the Festool has. Ribs are standard 16mm wide, spaced 32mm apart, with a further 119mm from the mid-rib to the edge of...

    Multi-Tools (Leatherman)

I have a Leatherman Wave and Skeletool. I found the wave to be too heavy for everyday carry, but good for travel; it’s 2/3 the weight of the Surge, so bear that in mind and maybe try and get your hands in one before buying. The Skeletool is my edc - light enough, good enough pliers with wire...

    Flush hinges, which way round?

:D :D Well, OK then - but it's a question that comes up quite often, so I thought it worthwhile anyway  Haven't used them for many years myself, but when you start looking at them and where the countersinks are on the leaves, it's pretty clear which way round they're meant to go...

    Flush hinges, which way round?

The smallest leaf on a flush hinge goes on the narrowest section - wether that’s the door or the carcass depends if they’re overlay or inset - and so determines wether the cranked knuckle faces ‘in or out’. Video out about this soon.

Built-in Cupboards and Bookcases in Alcoves

+1 to what the guys said above. 18mm MR MDF for the carcasses, 22mm for the doors with either 6 or 9mm panels (depends on size) and 6mm backs on the carcasses. Shelves are usually 22mm MR MDF with a solid timber lipping if the span is >750mm; if they’re adjustable and you know they’ll be...

    Favorite YouTube woodworker

No worries, all comments taken in the spirit they were intended. Actually I agree about long-winded intro sequences with inappropriate music - but ultimately it's the individuals' own channel and they can do exactly what they like, along the journey of finding out what works for them and their...

I had a tour of the YouTube spaces in Chelsea Market when I was in New York last year, and it’s such a fantastic resource - provided you’re a vlogger! Completely unsuited to anything remotely ******-ish... sorry, maker-ish - I’m still getting those confused after this thread - they have kitchens...

Yes, skillbuilder are doing really well, and I’ve chatted with Matt Jackson at Next Level Carpentry for a while; don’t know Essential Craftsman, I’ll take a look, thanks for the rec. It’s something we chat about in the next podcast, albeit in the context of the difficulties & impediments wrt...

That's a refreshingly honest opinion that you're perfectly entitled to hold - a little judgemental, perhaps, us never having exchanged a word. And wrong, of course, but... ...this I take exception to. I have never done any such thing, on the contrary I go out of my way to not only respond to...

    Favorite YouTube woodworker

There’s a few reasons; firstly, I enjoy it - it’s re-kindled an interest in ‘visual arts’ (photography/imaging/video) that I haven’t had since I called it a day on the photographic business best part of 20 years ago. Secondly, it’s something I can do tolerably well, and as retirement beckons I’m...

Was that criticism, lol! I took it to be a few grumpy old guys moaning about things on YouTube they didn’t like or were confused about, so I thought I’d help by explaining, as simply as I could, why the things they don’t like happen. You’re welcome.

Prominent British youtuber Keith Brown did a recent ‘how much money do I make’ vid. and although he included all sales and commercial work, he’s only making minimum wage. https://youtu.be/1BdB-c4Cv40 And snce we’re venting, here my pet YouTube hate; all the whingeing moaners who think channels...

Just bought a Titan plunge saw

Sorry, late to this. The grippy strips under the Titan rails aren’t the best - nothing comes close to the Festool rails for this - but they should be enough to stop the rail sliding; don’t think I’ve ever clamped my Titan rails down. Rail clamps are well worth having, though Screwfix isn’t the...

    Alcove approach advice

I’ve fitted thousands of hinges into MDF edges without any issues. Pilot hole, and appropriate screws of a decent length and you won’t have any problems. Alternatively if you’re going for the same traditional look as in the picture, you could treat the ‘face-frames’ as infills ie attached to the...
