MFT sacrificial strip and where to put it.

Hi there and thanks for your kind comments. I do talk a little about the sacrificial strip placement in the portable bench build vids, and the MFT replacement top vids, but obviously your actual placement will depend on how you’re planning to locate the rail eg rail dogs that attach to the rail...

    Which brand of air nailer?

I have a couple of the Silverline air nailers, a 16g from 2012 that hasn’t missed a beat, and a more recent 18g that also seems to be working out well. They’re basic and cheaply constructed as you might expect from a sub £30 nailer, but do the job just fine;18g will cover the size of nails...

Big thumbs up for Strawbyte Workshop

I highly recommend Karl’s waste-side jigs as well - perfect for narrow tracksaw rips.

Advice - Bosch or Mafell plunge saw?

I'm used to putting my left hand on the rail's LHS T-slot ahead of the saw, Doug - purely a muscle-memory thing having used nothing but Festool & Makita pattern rails for ~20 years - and not being able to do that with the Mafell rails was like losing a hand; or maybe gaining one. I'm sure it's...

Advice - Bosch or Mafell plunge saw?

It's a known issue with the narrower Mafell and Bosch tracks - the base of the saw overhangs the rail at the left hand side. Coming from the Festool side of things, I found it quite uncomfortable to use when I had the Mafell on loan for a few months.

Advice - Bosch or Mafell plunge saw?

    Your belief is misplaced.

    Good plug for Peter Millard

Oo-er! Thanks for pointing that out Phil! Not a Sunday times reader so that would have passed me by! 👍👍

Bargain Alert - Ikea £1 Aluminium Extrusions - DIY MFT Style Clamping

Thanks again @Rob_Mc for the heads-up; mine arrived this week. We're currently self-isolating (family member tested positive) so I haven't had much opportunity to play properly, but certainly with the Festool rail clamps I have here (lever and screw) the thin-wall extrusion is a slight issue...

    Wardrobe door doesn't close fully

Hi Nico. The only time I've seen that with concealed hinges is when the hinges are right at the extreme of their lateral adjustment; if that's the case you should be able to get the middle door to close by un-adjusting it - open the left-hand door to avoid a clash, obvs. If it shuts OK once...

    MDF finishing

Yacht varnish and Osmo? Sounds like you want the natural beauty of the MDF to show through?? That’s not something I’ve ever been asked for tbh. For painting, I don’t do anything special - a water-based acrylic primer undercoat, followed by a water-based acrylic topcoat in the finish of your...

YouTube Woodworking Channel Format?? And camera choice?

My two-penneth, for what it’s worth. Don’t overanalyse it at this stage - start making videos and figuring out what works for you - it’s your channel. And remember, just because you’ve made a video doesn’t mean you have to post it. Don’t fret about cameras and lenses - but do pay some...

Bargain Alert - Ikea £1 Aluminium Extrusions - DIY MFT Style Clamping

Thanks @Rob_Mc - my nearest store? Wembley! 🤷‍♂️ Ah what the heck, I’ll spend some of my YouTube millions and pay for delivery. Appreciate the heads-up, will keep you posted. 👍

Anyone else have an issue with differing Makita track profiles?

I was told way back by DeWalt that their rail extrusions change shape as they cool down - they’re extruded at heat, of course - so they’re made ‘wonky’ so they cool down straight; I’m not really a ‘metals’ guy, but I’d expect that’s where the batch variations come in?? The OP’s Makita rail...

Anyone else have an issue with differing Makita track profiles?

I’ve never seen a variation like that from the same manufacturer. That’s unacceptable. I’d contact FFX about sending both rails back for replacement under warranty as they’re not fit for purpose.

    Festool Kapex Recall

A large part of the delay has been down to the fact that post-brexit, there would be export/import duties applied on each saw; this has taken some time to work around, and I received an email from Festool explaining this. My empty box was delivered last week, and the full box is being collected...

    Buying a Tracksaw

No, pretty sure it’s unique to Mafell; the Makita - like all the others afaik - has a simple depth stop for the scoring cut; only the Mafell has the cutesie blade-shifting trick that didn’t work quite as planned on the one I had.

The excel rail is the closest copy of the Makita rail I've ever come across. Excel 1.5m Aluminium Guide Rail for Makita and Festool Plunge Saw. 👍

    Drawing software.

I think you need to define ‘drawing’ - do you mean artistic sketches of ideas, or do you mean CAD-style plans, as the approaches are very different. And if CAD-style, do you need 3D or will 2D be enough? FWIW I use Graphic.app (graphic.com) for my 2D line drawings and it works well, though I...

    Buying a Tracksaw

😂 Feels that way! @bluenose, £150 puts you in a really awkward place tbh, as the saws you can buy around that price point aren’t much different to the entry-level models. For example, the Triton plunge saw presents itself as a mid-range saw, but is visually identical (colour-schemes aside) to...
