    g-plan table refurb

I'm in the middle of refurbishing three G plan coffee tables. old varnish removed with card scrapers and abranet (which doesn't clog like sandpaper and leaves a nicer finish), smoothed with steel wool, and oiled with good ol' Colron danish oil btw: I couldn't get any Colron a few weeks ago so I...

    Record Rebate / Rabbet Plane 078 & 778 Instructions

that approach can be problematic with tricky grain unless your rebate plane works on both sides. I try to get it right first time but usually use a shoulder plane to clean the vertical surface

    Record Rebate / Rabbet Plane 078 & 778 Instructions

I'll have a rummage in my bits box: I'm pretty sure I've got one, and if so, you can have it for the cost of postage

smoothing the top of a mahogany table

will do... there's a small but awkward crack in one end of the top which I'm thinking about remedying btw: this would have taken days with a scraper alone. the top was quite 'wavy' and needed about 0.25mm taking off here and there

    Record Rebate / Rabbet Plane 078 & 778 Instructions

the 78 used to be very common - a great rebate plane. I find the most important part of using one (apart from starting the cut on the far end of the wood) is to make sure the vertical surface is always in full contact with the workpiece. once you get 'steps' on the vertical part of the rebate...

    danish oil brands

I usually use Colron danish oil but couldn't get hold of any, so I got some Rustins... the results were disappointing. it was thin and didn't harden well do you have a preferred brand?

smoothing the top of a mahogany table

I picked up a mahogany table for next to nothing at a car booty. I think it was an 'apprentice' project as the top was far from flat - rather wavy. got it sorted with a scraper plane as the backwards-forwards grain made using a smoothing plane a little tricky

    Men Sheds!

note that they say "mainly women" and "mainly men" on each day... not that anyone ever goes on the other days to flirt, you understand ;) there's a lot of male banter on Thursdays, but with a polite tone as there are often ladies nearby. Mondays is a bit of a 'sewing bee' atmosphere amongst the...

fitting dust extraction to a Minimax C22 multifunction machine

thanks... we (me and the chap I share a workshop with) collected it yesterday and had a closer look, but we haven't run it yet as it needs a bit of refurbishment - mainly removing surface rust. is it right to assume that a lot of the chips from the jointer/thicknesser drop into the space...

    Men Sheds!

our local 'Shed' (it's both men's and womens', with mostly women on Mondays and men on Thursdays, with "woodwork Wednesday" for both) is next to my workshop. it's a really great project which makes stuff for the local community... there aren't that many professional woodworkers involved so I...

    Plywood supplies in/to BA11 area?

what I like about FABS is their service. if you're looking around in the yard, within a minute or two someone will ask if you need a hand with anything. their prices are good too and you can get a discount without opening a trade account. I always go to them first

    Plywood supplies in/to BA11 area?

the quality is pretty good - good finish and hardwood all the way through - but not as stable as birch ply

    Plywood supplies in/to BA11 area?

Sydenhams took over Avon Ply... you might be able to get a good deal there, but I avoid what used to be Tipadel unless I can't help it. several times I've been quoted one price on the phone and a higher one at the counter I'd recommend FABS near Beckington/Rode - always get very good service...

fitting dust extraction to a Minimax C22 multifunction machine

hi - wasn't sure which forum to post in, as it's about DIY dust extraction on a Minimax C22 combination machine (with table saw, planer-thicknesser, jointer, spindle moulder and mortiser) it's a really solid bit of kit in good shape which I've been offered at a very good price, but it appears...

    Lidl Japanese Saw

there's a specific technique with a pull saw: first, cut across to establish your front-back square cut. then either drop the handle or reposition the work to cut down the line on the side you can see. reposition so you can cut the other side in the same way. the uncut part of the kerf now has a...
