Advice on creating a moulding on a massive beam

I don't have any suitable moulding planes.

Advice on creating a moulding on a massive beam

Thanks, but those cutters are too small, I need at least 19mm radius.

Advice on creating a moulding on a massive beam

Yes, more like this: That's an example from about 1500. You can see the counter-beams above have the same detail on them. I did think about cutting a section out and planting a moulding on, but it this will be lightly stained and clear finished so it may look like an obvious hack. Also the...

Advice on creating a moulding on a massive beam

I had this in the back of my mind for a fall back solution, but it doesn't seem as nice as making a moulding on the beam.

Advice on creating a moulding on a massive beam

Good idea about sawing the quirk. The moulding will need to stop before the ends, but that shouldn't be a problem. Saw and plane sounds like the way to go.

Advice on creating a moulding on a massive beam

Good idea about sawing the quirk, I was fixated on router/plane based solutions. Span is 21'. This is for a 'plafond Francaise' similar to this: Fairly lightweight and 16" square beams are more than adequate for the span. This was replaced maybe 100 - 150 years ago and the replacement had a...

Advice on creating a moulding on a massive beam

It is traditional, just trying to copy an original from 1650.

Advice on creating a moulding on a massive beam

My current project involves replacing two beams which will form part of a ceiling and floor above. The beams are 40cm (16") square by 7m (23') long. Not weighed, but they are pine and therefore they probably weigh about a third of a ton. I am trying to work out how to put a round bead moulding...

    Euro plug

This link shows pictures of a Legrand socket and the last image is the back of the socket with pins labelled L E N, live therefore on the right looking at the front of the socket. Two pin plugs can be plugged in either way round, but in theory two pin plugs are only allowed on double insulated...

Convention in France is that phase (live) is on the right, looking at the socket. I.e. same side as UK.

    Insurance

+1 for Hiscox. They are expensive, but I have made two claims in 15 years, both settled instantly with no fuss. Most recent was for £2600 of tools stolen last autumn from my workshop (detached garage), police not interested. Now I work in Fort Knox.

    Steel rules

Thanks @Jacob, I don’t mind spending a bit, but I‘m looking for a rule with 1/8ths and 1/16ths only for ease of seeing and use. Most metric/imperial rules start their scales with 1/2mm or 1/32” divisions. I find these a pain if I’m trying to set a gauge to 5/8ths, say.

    Steel rules

They do, and it’s a great tool. The version they stock has metric and imperial scales, which is perfectly fine, but I wanted the version that is imperial only which has 1/8ths on one edge and 1/16ths on the other, like this Starrett:

Thanks @raffo, sadly it doesn’t look like they ship to England.

    Steel rules

Thanks, Peter. That double square is a great tool, I bought the 4R version from the US, but I’d have happily have bought it from you. The Fischer rule also looks good, very similar to the Shinwa that I already have. I guess that it doesn’t make sense for you to stock imperial only rules, but I...

    Steel rules

I've recently started to use imperial measurements in projects - I am of the generation that was taught both imperial and metric systems so I find it easy to switch between them. Apart from the fact that my last few projects have come from drawings with imperial measurements, I have realised...

Black Mould on Birch Ply - advice needed

I’ve used bleach in the past, the cheapest bleach from Tesco. I don’t think that you can prevent it from returning, whatever you use (been there, done that), you either have to change the conditions that you keep the birch in to prevent fungus returning, or you need to paint it.

    Block Planes

I have the Quangsheng Luban rebate block plane and I use that much often than the standard quangsheng or the Stanley that I also have. It’s easy to set up, comfortable to use and very useful for trimming shoulders and rebates, on top of normal block plane duties.

https://www.3m.co.uk/3M/en_GB/p/d/v000082834/ 3M Peltor Optime. I can wear these for hours, and not expensive.

    Random- how many sockets?

The French regs have the tumble dryer and washing machine on independent 2.5mm circuits with a 20A breaker for each one. General purpose kitchen radials are 2.5mm, 20A breaker and max 6 sockets per circuit. I guess you might trip that with a fan heater, kettle, toaster & microwave, but the...
