That’s the chap I was thinking of!

    Hydro power from small river?

There’s a guy on utube; don’t recall his name right now, but will scratch my head… anyway, he’s a former IT guy who’s walked away from the rat race in favour of self sufficiency. Many of his videos tend to be about the more technical stuff he’s done, including developing a small hydro power...

Table Saw - made in Taiwan / Germany

Taiwan can certainly produce good quality products. For me though, there’s always the question of whether I need a new item, or will a good new item be a better choice; possibly better for the planet, possibly a better spec item for my money (it’s not always a matter of saving money per se), and...

Table Saw - made in Taiwan / Germany

Well to put that in context, my saw was one of a selection of not-very-old Sedgwicks; I chose the one nearest to me, and had it collected; it only required the usual set up, just as you would do with a new saw (in some cases less, because all the basic assembly was done) ie fitting fences, blade...

    Heating a insulated workshop

It strikes me that there are two slightly different heating needs; a comfortable temperature for work (perhaps a wood/sawdust burner) and maintaining a constant temperature, above which you won’t have problems with equipment or materials (for instance above the dew point).

Table Saw - made in Taiwan / Germany

whilst I understand that many of us are cash rich and time poor, and so there is value in a new machine. Moreover, there will be a warranty! But, I would always endorse secondhand! These are simple machines, with not a great deal to go wrong; the amount of fettling required of a good secondhand...

    Meddings S68 motor

As I’ve said elsewhere, this isn’t about making the most cost effective solution, for me; I have about £400 invested in all my machine tools (Sedgwick table saw, Startrite bandsaw, SCM spindle moulder, dominion p/t, Meddings drill, extraction system), so there’s some latitude to spend a little...

    Meddings S68 motor

Sawtooth-9, I’ve found your thread and it is indeed the same machine! Of course, the thing to do will be to open the machine up! However, having looked at the schematic, the simplest way I can see to have attached the new motor to the gear box is to have removed the old armature; the picture...

    Meddings S68 motor

If the old motor were left in place, would it not be turned by the new motor, and so be a generator, and thus a load on the new motor? Unless of course the old motor were mechanically decoupled from the gearbox.

    Pillar drill

I think the best thing to do, when it comes to Far Eastern machines such as this, is assume nothing and trust nobody; we all know that products are prodigiously made under different badges, or simply copied, often with varying specifications and quality. Therefore base your decisions upon what...

Is a multi function workshop a flying submarine?

Spectric makes a good point. Another option to overhead that I’ve seen used is to mount power sockets on the front face of a bench, meaning the chord of power tools is entirely on your side of the work.

Thank you! That looks an informative read

Is a multi function workshop a flying submarine?

I would ensure from the outset that I had plenty of power outlets and lighting options, meaning that they don’t become a restriction on the evolution of your workshop, nor something to further overthink.

    DC Motors

Yep, I think that’s agreed; it’s as much an itch to scratch, having seen commercially available drills (eg from Axminster), boasting a DC motor.

    Great! Thanks for the link

Well I have 4 Meddings drills to mess about with, so it’s as much an experiment as a search for the easiest or best solution.

    DC Motors

Yeah, that was my thinking. I may yet swing back to DC; It’s probably going to come down to how much time I have, and other projects demanding the drill.
