Hacksaws: How to choose 'em, how to use 'em, + other "stuff"

For cutting harder material use a finer tooth blade than you would normally, slow the stroke down a good bit and put as much pressure on the blade as you dare. Even the better quality carbon steel blades will get through spring steel or that inevitable occasion when a high tensile bolt or...

    Poly V belts

Problem: My old Myford ML10 lathe would originally have been fitted with flat belt cone pulleys for changing speed (as well as the usual back gearing) giving 6 speeds in total. Someone (not me) has changed the flat belt set up for standard 1/2 inch cone pulleys on the lathe spindle and the...

    Surface plates

Standard Standard test for flatness was the use of a certified optical flat. I forget the conversion from optical interference patterns to 'real' measurements (it depends on the wavelength of light used - usually an orange sodium discharge tube). OK, Mr Google knows everything! Way, way OT...

    Surface plates

As an aside, if wearing gloves...

It's hard to believe, but stanley still makes a #7

Easy enough to make an iron from oil hardening gauge plate. You can still sharpen the blade on normal stones yet the steel holds the edge better than plain carbon steel. Probably not worth the effort (or expense) for jack work but far better for fine finishing, especially on hardwoods...
