    Mystery Lathe.

Thanks again! Before the topic drift gets too far, the shear pin holes don't go right through the gear body which would strengthening the tooth you indicate. I may also have a solution to the 100T wheel but thanks for your offer. Regarding a shadowgraph. To keep it simple with no mirrors or...

    Mystery Lathe.

Thanks so much for taking the time to look into this. Looking at the photo on Evilbay, the Tufnol gear is plain with no keyway. As tumble gears they are only used to reverse direction for LH threads Originally Myford used small shear pins, think 1/16 dia to transmit power through the train...

    Mystery Lathe.

    J-G Ah! Not 30 tpi, it's 0.030 pitch. 0.125 pitch on the lead screw/0.030 pitch on the job. Ratio 125/30 = 250/60 = 25/6. times 3 top and bottom gives 75/18. (could also use 75/36 with a 2/1 iteremediate compound but currently I can't source a 36T). Should note:driver is 18T and the driven 75T...

Senior moment! Recount gives 24 tpi. Will check it for definite with a clock on the advance over a few threads. 25tpi would equate to 0.040 pitch, 40 divivisions on the micrometer dial. 24 tpi is 41 and a bit thou pitch (0.0417" which would give an error of 17 thou over 10 turns) which is odd...

OK, checked the nose as best I could. Od is 0.477", sloppy 1/2" and the pitch is somewhere between 0.060 and 0.065".Assuming it's 0.0625 this would equate to 1/2 BSF. Taps and dies readily available for finishing the thread. As it's a remake I'll settle for that and it will be in keeping with...

    Victorian Lathe Project

One way to tell if machinery is pre WWI are the sizes on Whitworth nuts and bolts. Old standard whit nuts and bolts had a larger head but this was reduced to save material. Still doesn't put it into the Vicotian era but it is a guide to age. Think screw cutting lathes were invented about 1860...

Helical slot in stainless steel tube - anyone have the equipment for this?

Another thought if yo wish to use your original design. Obtain, beg, borrow, steal or last resort buy a length of stainless steel keyway bar and with a bit of heat and pesuation put a twist on it. Fairly basic blacksmith job although precision might be a challenge.

Helical slot in stainless steel tube - anyone have the equipment for this?

I'm puzzled. The usual approach for a solar tracker is to have an axis pointed to the Pole Star and rotate round the axis once per Sidereal day. Depends somewhat on the magnification you are using but the drive is usually via tooth wheel and a worm drive on a stepping motor. For very high...

    Victorian Lathe Project

Old cast iron machinery was always over engineered, the castings frequently had hard spots and small blow hole in. The weight though is a huge bonus when it comes to forming or screw cutting. Unless you are particularly brutal, chatter and climbing the tool is rarely a problem. Same goes for 4...

    Mystery Lathe.

Its another problem, there's only one and a bit threads on the nose and I haven't really l looked at it too close. The original bronze bushes have also been robbed out and the attempted replacemts are far too small on the OD. So bad it doesn't even rattle, more of a sulk! It's a simple hollow...

Lego & Myford - who knew?

I've a motor and speed reduction gearing of a lawn scarifier. The gears are mostly steel (one hard nylon) and they are spiral cut. I guarantee you could buy and scrap 10 machines for price you would be charged for making the gears. It's bonkers!

    Poly V belts

I do have a notched belt for the final drive. To fit the pulleys without bottoming there is insufficient room between the headstock casting to get the belt over the top of the pulley. Looking at pictures of old lathes they were originally have had flat belts and not a problem changing speed.

    Mystery Lathe.

The plot thickens! Removed the feed screw from the longitudinal slide to clean it up a bit and basically determine the thread size with a view to adding a micromer scale. Primary question, is it metric or imperial? Its imperial - but - the thread appears to be 5/16 x 25 tpi pitch. So far, so...

    Poly V belts

Years ago I stripped an oldwashing machine down to nuts, bolts, drum, electrical harness and lumps of concrete. I actually wanted the sheet metal! Huge poly V pulley on the drum and a drive direct from the motor with something like a 1/2 - 5/8 dia. Spindle and grooves cut directly onto it...

Should add, there are no makers marks or personals tramps on it anywhere

    Mystery Lathe.

It's a beautiful little lathe in need of some TLC. Overall length is about 8". Possibly a toolmaker or dockie apprentice piece or a part finished kit for the watch/clockmaker/model railway type market. It even has a miniature 4 way tool post complete with turning, facing and parting tools...

    Poly V belts

Thanks for the reply. 11tpi chaser sounds interesting, in the distant past I made one by pitching the compound slide using a single V point tool. Current pulleys are standard 1/2 inch wide groove to suit a v belt. No room to get the belt onto the next pulley without a lot of arm wrestling. I'm...

    Mouldy MDF shelving in shed

Mdf and chipboard are just compost waiting to sprout mushrooms. Yatch varnish will help as will addional ventilation and fixing any leaks in the roof. If there is any likely hood of dampness either use treated timber (decking makes a fair bench top or, if you can swing it past the significant...

    Help MT2 stuck

OK, looks like you are dealing with an MT with possibly no tang that's come loose, spun and siezed (read friction welded!) itself into the shaft while under load. If you've already managed to drill it it should be soft enough to machine out. May need tipped tools though. Bit of a pain but...

    Wood-turning lathe

3/4 x 16tpi is a UNF thread (American), do you know a metal basher who could make you a backplate?
