    torsion boxes, why no triangles?

Bracing counteracts other forces than just torsion, I suppose torsion box sound better than stability box or bracing box. There are far to many acronyms today, the meaning is usually only known by the person using it. ;)

    torsion boxes, why no triangles?

Torsion is a twisting force. A single sheet of ply can twist, so any frame will add torsional stiffness to the sheet. The more braces add to the stiffness. The different directions of the braces resist twisting in the direction of the brace. In a bench top (MFT) the braces stop the top sagging...

    Sjobergs Bench

Wood acclimatises to it’s environment. As a woodworker, one or two strokes with a plane would probably cure your problems for ever.

    No No's on projects

I was told by a joiner that in shear a screw will snap where a nail won’t. He said, use the correct fixings for the intended use. Seems sensible when said like that.

    Gout 😥

Hi, I had my first attack of gout in my late 30’s. Exactly 2 years later I had a second attack. The trigger for me is dehydration, quite often I would not have a drink until I left site. If it is gout it is caused by a high uric acid level and the uric acid forms crystals usually in a joint eg...

Yet another shedshop Mike's way. Ish

My 5 x 4.2 metre shed blew my budget of £10k out of the water, a bit like Grand Designs. The garden was not level with a 2 foot drop over 4.2 metres, so a big slab. The concrete came in at twice my expected cost.

    Sheds and boundaries...

Put the apex in the long side rather than the short side. I did this on an old shed. You have a better aspect facing the house as well. So not viewing the roof slope. It also gave me some storage in the roof space.

    Workshop shed planning permission

I needed full planning as my workshop is in front of the build line ( in front of the house). I could do what I wanted if it was to the side or behind the house. No building regs, but needed by electrics signed off. It is 4.2 x 5m, should have made it bigger.

    Heating a insulated workshop

Hi, my workshop is much smaller at 5 x 4.5 metres. I use a single 1200w IR heater and this brings up from 5•c to 17•c in about 40 minutes. A friend has a much larger space and she used 4 IR heaters. They cycle on and off once up to temp and I can turn it on/off from an app on my phone. In the UK...

    Hi from Northumberland

If the cranky gets her way, the border will be closed anyway. She will probably blow the Coldstream Bridge.

Hi, I still have family near Morpeth. I’m probably as close to Scotland whilst still living in England.
