    Steb centres

No one has mentioned that a big bonus ring and step type centres have is that they mark the wood much less than other types of centre. A normal live centre can leave a deep indent into the surface of the wood. The centre spike of the steb is spring loaded so does not create a deep indent and the...

We used Macrium at work, restores an image very quickly, not sure about incremental backups. I currently use windows system images and file history. Remember to make a bootable disc.

    New Windsor Chair

Just returned from a week with Steve Langton (Tom Thackray & Steve Langton Windsor Chairs), making my second Windsor Chair. Great week in Steve’s workshop. Really pleased with the chair. Wife now wants 4 dining chairs in the same style. I can’t recommend Steve enough, very skilled and...

    New table saw? Lumberjack TS1800

Mine came with the slow blow fuses fitted. There doesn’t seem to be too much sawdust on the saw top when cutting, so the extraction seems OK to me, but I have not had another table saw to compare it with. Mine came with a 5/8 blade, which are difficult to get and or expensive in the UK. Not...

    New table saw? Lumberjack TS1800

Did I get the wrong end of the stick. Front and back rails are in 2 parts, a short and long section. So you could just install one section with some sorting, as there are spikes which slot the two sections together. The measures built into the front fence would be of no use. Have seen a router...

    New table saw? Lumberjack TS1800

You can’t install just one fence rail. The both the rails are used to clamp the fence in place. I can’t see how you could use the fence with only one rail. You could have a fence on your workbench which you set the saw into, using just the cast table top for the mitre slots.

    USB socket advice.

I agree with the comments about not using a socket just for a usb charger, several of my lights I use around my lathe are usb charged. So I have a couple of double sockets with usb A built in. I do have a usb C socket in the kitchen and this does charge my iPad with no problem. You need to check...

laying reclaimed floorboards on to screed

We put a two part finish on the floor when we laid 18mm oak t&g. This is a damp proof and allows wood to be laid onto green concrete. It also gives a key for the glue as the surface af the scree is too powdery for the glue to adhere to. Depending on the age of the floor you may need 2 coats. We...

    Record power lathe

Have a look on line for AWGB.co.uk Association of Woodturners of Great Britain. If you put your postcode in the search, it will tell you of clubs near you. Wood turning societies are a great place to start, they usually have lessons for new turners on their own lathes and the more experienced...

Help please - engineered flooring problem .

The images are not clear to me, but is that not the tongue you can see? The way the groove has opened across the floor, the floor has moved, as you can see the short edge has shifted on one joint as well. I had to seal my concrete floor with a two part resin coating by Sika, without doing that...

I only want to turn wood into dowel, otherwise round bars

Getting your spindle parallel is all about practice, set your tool post parallel to the lathe bed, when you hold the gouge have your hand or a finger running along the tool post so that the gouge is running parallel as well. You can use the parting tool to cut to a depth of 37mm in several...

I only want to turn wood into dowel, otherwise round bars

Just remember it will be more difficult to get a good finish on cheap pine than say ash or other harder woods, but with practice you can turn pine to a good finish.

I only want to turn wood into dowel, otherwise round bars

If you are only turning dowels, You can do all the cutting with a spindle roughing gouge. The name does the gouge a disservice. You can get a very good finish and accurate dimensions with this one tool. Keep it sharp. The roughing gouge will take your stock from square to round and turn down...
