General thoughts of whether better to buy a metal or wooden shed particularly if I want a stove with a chimney?

It all comes down to budget. My wooden workshop is lined and insulated. Wood needs to breathe or it will rot, sealing with foam is a bad idea. A breathable membrane between the frame and outside planking will keep the wet out. I did look at a metal option with an insulated metal skin. Was more...

    Bandsaw upgrade

Record Power Sabre bandsaws have the guides they should have used on their bandsaw the first place. They now use a standard mitre slot on the table rather then some weird size that you can’t buy. I now have Rikon guides fitted on my BS350S, following the instructions on the great write up on...

First dining chair made in the same style as the Windsor chair I made. Not 100% happy with it. Should have it sorted by the time I have done the other 5 chairs the wife wants. She wants wheel back splats in two.

Best outdoor wood sealer C24 timber

I use Osmo uv protection oil on my shed cladding. Two coats to start with. Expensive but so far so good.

    Stain woes

The sanding scratches are coarser than 320 grit, you need to remove the scratches before moving on to the next grit.

    Cast iron table top protection?

I use Boeshied T-9 spay on my metal surfaces.

Why are some router tables made up of cast iron but not others?

Vibration can cause chatter, so instead of your nice smooth surface you get some undulations.

    Multitool advice

I bought a fein corded about 15 years ago when laying an oak floor, great for cutting door frames to get the 18mm oak boards under the frame. It is still going strong. Never had to change brushes on it yet. Fein had the patient, which ran out and everyone makes them now. Bought a dewalt cordless...

    Rutlands Warning!

My latest purchase from Rutland's is a mitre gauge and fence for my table saw. On special offer and a big improvement on the fence supplied with the saw. Do I feel conned?, no ! very happy with it and at a good price. Oh did come in a brown cardboard box, so no pretty pictures, but very...

    Rutlands Warning!

Actually can’t think of anything that I got from Rutland Tools that I’m not happy with. Especially if it’s on one of their sales. Can’t expect Festool for the price of Titan, nothing wrong with Titan either.

    Rutlands Warning!

Every thing you buy, you get an email to leave a review. Really bugs me, a couple of companies wouldn’t post a negative review. Especially if it was down to poor delivery, as far as I’m concerned delivery is part of the service. I’ve bought from Rutland Tools and have been happy with what I’ve...

How not to drill a pen blank or turning your jacobs chuck into a hammer!

We all make errors of judgement, if we are lucky we get to learn from it. I think everyone who turns has had something come off the lathe at one time or another. Normally down to user error, even if it’s just a change in sound missed or ignored when turning.

How not to drill a pen blank or turning your jacobs chuck into a hammer!

That is why you hold the drill chuck when drilling. Other wise it may come out of the tail stock when extracting the drill. He also did not clear the drill flutes, by extracting the drill periodically. This was an accident waiting to happen. Was it a video of how not to drill a blank on a lathe...

This was a great week with Steve, he is a very skilled woodworker and great instructor. No fancy computerised gadgets, all doable in a home workshop. And came away with a great chair. The wife wants 4 dining chairs to match.

Record Power BS350S Bandsaw Modifications - Part 1: Blade Guide Upgrade Using Rikon Tool-Less Kit

I just had a set of the Rikon guides shipped to me from Highland wood working in the US. The delivery via FedEx was quicker than most UK deliveries from a UK supplier. The top guides installation was straightforward, initially did not pickup on shortening the blade guard, wondering why I had...

    Centres for Skew practicing

The type of catch you get with a skew usually results in a nice deep spiral cut running back up the timber towards the head stock and a steb won’t stop that. A deep dig in will stall the wood and the dead steb will just spin the the timber stopping.
