    Running out of time...

The legacy thing, name living on after I pop my clogs, is one of the reasons I started signing the things I make in the workshop. I also started keeping a notebook for the things I made too. It may not be a bestselling novel, but it's something that can be passed on to another family member, or...

    Corded impact driver?

Impact drill is not the same as an impact driver. Impact drill will transmit the force axially, like hitting the drill bit with a hammer. Impact driver will transmit the force radially, to turn the bit. They are not designed to be used interchangeably. It really depends what you are trying to...

    kitchen query

    1. I'm sure it was an auto correct thing, but 'insulted plasterboard' made me smile. 2. Is there any way for you to build a frame against the plasterboard, attached to the wall through the board to stop it falling over, but so that the weight is actually down to the floor or to the counter top...

    Thicknessing wood on the bandsaw

As a compromise, and I know this is rather off topic, but I do remember seeing a YT video where an old guy had set up a treadle attachment using a bicycle gear and chain to a bandsaw. Very little noise if you go that route, and you get variable speed, and the exercise of a hand tool. I have a...

    BLO not hardening: Options?

As an update, I soaked a rag in white spirits, wiped it over the soft areas a few times, then came back again. Seemed to hep to get the soft stuff softer, to the point where it started to move around and come away in to the cloth, but it was a lot of work for fairly little gain. So I turned a...

    BLO not hardening: Options?

Nah, an old plank and some fence slats. I know their provenance though, so I know they haven't had concrete or tar or anything like that on them.

    BLO not hardening: Options?

I have a project I am working on that is almost complete, I reached for the linseed oil, gave it a coat, and all looked fine. I gave it a second coat a day later, but now significant areas don't seem to be hardening. I tried putting the piece near a radiator, but that hasn't helped. Has anyone...

    Soap finish

It's not difficult to prepare. I made some soap finish last year, it works OK (you can watch if you like, or not, it's up to you. That was my first time doing it, and takes no special equipment). It is used a lot in Scandinavia, but does need to be refreshed fairly regularly (not difficult to...

Hand sanding, using 6" circular discs?

I have some 150mm platens that are sold as accessory replacements. I just made a handle and screwed it up through the base.

    Saw and plane from Germany

Love my wooden scrub planes. Wife picks them up now and again at village fairs, they are usually in need of a bit of TLC, but such a joy to use. (I have one from pre-1945). Also worth remembering a company called Pinie, they make wooden planes as well.

what type of saw or similar would be most suited for thin slots (photo holders)

Maybe look at it the other way around. Get a spare blade for a miter saw (the manual ones, not a power one) and clamp it to a workbench edge or in a vise, and then (whilst wearing gloves), take the cast part to the saw blade and run it slowly along the blade.

    UK alternative to pipe clamps?

I am lucky enough to get occasional trips to the US on business, so I pick up the clamp parts when I can. But I get all the 3/4" pipe at my local Obi (in the plumbing section, next to the plastic water pipe) in 1m and 2m standard lengths, already threaded at both ends, so I suspect you will be...

Didn't know this tool even existed!

There's a festool that has the chain fixed. It is mounted to a plunge saw gearcase and such, so runs on their rail. I have used one to mill lumber (not large pieces). You have to cut the very tip off the riving knife, but it works well enough. (BTW, I didn't pay for the saw, so couldn't say if...

    Woodworking Square recommendations please

If you are cutting up ply, why not use the 345 to find the squarest corner, and use that as your square? That way it will fit the ply you want to cut, can be used as a straight edge to guide whatever tool you are using to break down the boards, and doesn't cost you anything. If you have enough...

How to get proper joints to pop when finishing off?

If you are just starting out, get some premixed shellac.

    Magnifying lens/light

I recently purchased some clip on lenses to aid me in situations like this, and in saw sharpening and other detail work. They are made by a company called ClipFlipz, (I got mine from isunglasses in the UK), They work well on my safety glasses, they are always where I am looking, and they don't...

Campervan cabinetry - ply & MDF novice Q's

It would be worth taking a look at the van conversion that Matt Estlea is doing at the moment on his YT channel. It has a lot of detail on the choice of materials, layout, weight distribution etc. And may also give you a few ideas too.

Post a photo of the last thing you made

Made a set of bookends from some left overs. I think the accent piece is cherry, the base and upright are from a fence slat, so probably spruce or pine. I recorded the build for a YT video.

Single most useful tool in your shop

Bench hook, although that may count more as a fixture than a tool. (As, presumably would the bench itself..)

Post a photo of the last thing you made

The wood is all the same piece, I just used two different shellac to get the different shade on the door. The inside is a piece of 30mm polystyrene with red velvet over the top.
