    Cutting circles

@AES on the strength of your lengthy and very helpful replies, and a wee dram of Laphroaig 🥃, I have tonight purchased an annual subscription to this forum. Not even sure what I'll get out of the subscription, but very happy to say that in my short time on this forum I've already had far more...

    Cutting circles

So far, I've only cut a few practice lines, made a couple of dolphins (compound scrolling) which I'm pleased with, and my third attempt at the ring.

.....and work on the subtleties. The photo show my current (lack of) freehand skills, but it is nothing a bit of sandpaper won't cure.

    Cutting circles

Thanks @Inspector and @AES 👍. I've learned a lot from your posts. It should have, but didn't occur to me that the pivot point on the jig should be at exactly 90 degrees to the cutting line of the blade. It was way out, so I think this was one of the main contributors making the curve into a...

    Cutting circles

Thanks, this was my second attempt. This time I made sure the hole and bolt were a tight fit and everything was clamped better and increased the blade tension. But got exactly the same result. A spiral blade might be worth a try, but I don't have one to hand and the blade I'm using is an Olson...

    Cutting circles

I'm learning to use my scroll saw and thoroughly enjoying the experience so far. I needed to cut a circle about 4" diameter from 7mm thick plywood. I thought I had a foolproof method for doing this, but soon realised I hadn't as the cut was spiralling inwards so that by the time I'd gone full...

    Scroll saw recommendations

@TomW that is a great scrollsaw pattern catalog. Over 3700 patterns. Will get some practice on some of those, Cheers 👍

    Scroll saw recommendations

Thanks everyone for all your help. Before joining this forum I had never even heard of a Hegner. Today I collected a well looked after Hegner Multicut 2s with variable speed, foot pedal, stand and a few extras. Just need to learn how to use it properly now. The previous owner is now sadly...

    Scroll saw recommendations

@AES I've been looking for the sticky you mention about scroll saw blades, but can't seem to find it even using a search. Is this still on the forum?

    Scroll saw recommendations

Thanks @AES that blade post will be very useful 👍. Thanks @ajs 👍 still waiting for a reply about the exact details. Assuming this is the basic single speed model, might that give me any limitations worth considering as a scroll saw newbie? I was originally considering a brand new entry level...

I'm may have found a good secondhand Hegner 2s. What are your thoughts on this model? Does anyone know if this is a variable speed model?

    Scroll saw recommendations

Thanks @AES as with most things it seems I need to spend more money 🤣. £250 is my budget at the moment, so I'll have to dip my toe in at that level, and if the bug really bites, I will have learned exactly what I need from, and why I need a substantially more expensive machine, and will then be...

    Scroll saw recommendations

In fact, thinking about it, I don't even need one with a foot pedal. I have some radio controlled remote smart plugs which are great for switching on dust extraction. I'm sure I could modify a remote switch into a foot pedal so I wouldn't even need the extra cable.

    Scroll saw recommendations

I would like to buy a scroll saw, though I've never used one before. After some practice I'd eventually like to make wooden clock type mechanisms and other small moving things with cogs etc. I've scoured reviews online, but entry level machines come with both good and bad reports. In order to...

Newbie - expect silly questions :)

@TRITON Ah yes, Sketchup, I've messed around with that in the past when my neighbour got a 3d printer and made some bits for me. I will have to fish out the book SketchUp for Dummies which I have somewhere. I also find it easier and can do a pretty neat job with pencil, paper and other drawing...

    Hello from Pershore

@point5clue Welcome. Just like you I need to reduce my YouTube woodworking video time and increase the sawdust 👍😊. Also I tend to keep every offcut bigger than a couple of inches 🙄. I'm just a beginner.

Newbie - expect silly questions :)

@recipio I suppose I'm trying to run before I can walk in wanting a perfect finish with less than ideal materials and beginners skills. I was intending to finely sand and finish these discs in Danish Oil or wood stain. But if they don't look perfect enough, I can resort to filler and paint to...

Newbie - expect silly questions :)

Thanks for your replies recipio and TRITON. @TRITON I just re-read my original post and apologise for misleading you. I have never used a software package for a CNC router before, but used to enjoy programming in various languages to generate 2d and 3d images just for fun on a computer screen...

Newbie - expect silly questions :)

Hi I'm Pete. I'm retired and plan to try my hand at a few woodworking projects and improve my skills, hence joining this forum as I know I'll need lots of guidance as my ideas surpass my woodworking skills. I get a kick out of creating something out of nothing, and have previously done this by...
