    Reducing lathe speed

Thanks @Paul Hannaby You are correct. I've now looked a bit more closely into this controller and see that it is only suitable for fans, water heaters, or bulbs, and states that it is not suitable for electric machinery. Charnwood W815 lathe keeps blowing fuses :(

I bought my first lathe in March and after just minutes of turning had exactly the same problem with blowing fuses. Here's a link to my post about it on this forum... https://www.ukworkshop.co.uk/threads/any-advice-welcome.141836/ My lathe looked almost identical to yours with the same spec...

    Reducing lathe speed

I have a 550w variable speed lathe with a minimum speed of 500 rpm. Can I reduce this speed further by plugging it into a 4000w 250 v AC mains PWM voltage regulator variable speed motor controller? Could this cause any damage?

    Turning speeds

A chart came with my lathe giving recommended turning speeds for different wood diameters when roughing, general turning or finishing. I'm very new to woodturning and only have carbide tools with square, round, and diamond cutters. I appreciate that normal tools require different techniques to...

    Any advice welcome

@Lonsdale73 Thanks, what a pity, I would have much preferred your Jet if I hadn't already taken the plunge last week on a new Charnwood w824 with chuck which cost very slightly more than your asking price. My daughter lives in your area so collection wouldn't have been a problem. I'm very...

    Any advice welcome

All great advice thank you. I have just joined a local turning group and attended a meeting which was a demo by a professional turner. Thoroughly enjoyed it, and learned lots of new stuff. Still haven't decided on a lathe yet, but after discussions with other members I'm much better informed...

    Any advice welcome

Are Draper any better? They do a 550w model that looks virtually identical to the Clarke apart from the colour for £30 more.

    Any advice welcome

Just returned the lathe to Machine Mart and I must say that the staff were excellent. After they made a quick phone call to the powers that be, they offered me a replacement or refund, so I took the refund and have my options open again. I like the idea of dealing with someone locally in case of...

    Any advice welcome

Thanks @Phil Pascoe that looks a great buy and within my budget and I have been known to travel such distances to collect items. However, it is way too big for my single garage workshop which is shared with other household storage. I need a mini or midi bench top model which I can manhandle to...

    Any advice welcome

Thanks very much for your interesting replies, I didn't expect such a great response. Amazon are brilliant and my fuses arrived at 10am this morning barely 15 hours from ordering on a Sunday evening! The new fuse blows with a pop as soon as the lathe is plugged into the mains without even...

    Any advice welcome

I've just bought a cheap new lathe to get me started. It is a Clarke cwl325 13" with variable speed. I have never used a lathe before so spent several days watching YouTube videos to get an idea what I was doing. Today I set up the lathe and mounted a small piece of pine about 40x40x300mm long...

    Table lamp electrical advice please

Thanks for clarifying @Spectric I understand now. The lamp will be used in a newish property with an up to date consumer unit. I had in mind the old RCD plug-through units that could be bought at garden centres for use with electric lawn mowers and other outdoor power tools. Thanks @Sideways...

    Table lamp electrical advice please

Thanks @Spectric I think 0.5mm cable would be much more flexible and better for this small lamp. Is an RCD really necessary? Here's a pic of the bulb holder and bulb, the only metal is in the two screw connectors and the bulb thread in the E14 plastic holder. All the other parts are wood. See...

    Table lamp electrical advice please

The cable exits the table lamp in the centre of the underside of the base, which is 105mm square and 20mm thick. Yes, I could fit a small switch on the base, however, any movement the 0.75mm squared cable will still move the lightweight lamp around and possibly knock it over. I would be...

    Table lamp electrical advice please

I've made a small wooden table lamp, and would like some advice on wiring it to a 3 pin 240v plug in accordance with UK regulations. My problem is, that with "normal table lamp" 0.75mm squared 2 core cable, the cable tends to be rather stiff when used with my very lightweight 10" tall table...

    Dust extraction

My quiet dust extraction system is a success 👍😊. It is whisper quiet, and once the Hegner is started, the blower fan can't be heard at all. I've checked with a torch below and above the table whilst cutting, and there is now ZERO atmospheric dust. The dust is now sucked away instantly at the...

    85mm saw choices

Thanks @deema. Please realise that I'm not at a level of skill to even dream about re-setting, sharpening or stoning the teeth on the saw 🤣. I'm new to all this, but very eager to learn. However, I really appreciate your input, and will work on the advice in your first paragraph above 👍.

    85mm saw choices

@Inspector thanks those Nobex saws look good. Better than the cheap ones limited to 45 and 22.5 degrees. I'm having a look at some used ones on eBay. Could be a cheap yet accurate way to go 👍. @deema thanks, looks like a very detailed and useful thread that I shall return to when I've worn out...

    85mm saw choices

Having taken in all your valued comments above, I've decided to save some money, for now, and take a different tack. Since I'm looking for something safe to use and do accurate cuts on smaller pieces of wood, I thought it was about time I put some effort into learning how to use one of these...
