Grrr... Right before I'd finished Turning them...

Yeah, I thought ebony too... I know it was a pig to get through, even with the carbides. I'm gonna hang onto the non-broken part - Maybe make a contrasting pen or something.

Grrr... Right before I'd finished Turning them...

I was using pretty thin glue on that one, but I found I get better results with Epoxy Resin, but you are right - a snugger fit would probably help a lot more. All the drill bits I have are either whole numbers or halfs. These slightly smaller drillbits you mention... Is that an amazon job...

    Wood ID!

Tonight I was prepping some pen blanks, and realised that I forgot to write down what some of the woods were when I bought them (Yandles Pick n Mix). I know the obvious ones: 2 - Zebrano 3- Purpleheart I think 5 is Paduk, and I think 6 is Wenge, but I put some Wenge behind it, and I dunno...

    Tidying The Workshop

Thingybob - I spotted that in Lidl and was tempted, but saner minds prevailed - I literally have 0 space to put it! I also have a cyclone thingy on my vac, and although it's useful, honestly It feels like there is less suction - It picks up dust and stuff, but anything with a bit of weight just...

Grrr... Right before I'd finished Turning them...

I hate it when this happens. First time turning Zebrano, and I know why it's called that. Smells like horse poop when drilling it out :D No idea what the black wood was, I got it in a box of random pen-turning stuff I bought from Gumtree.

Post a photo of the last thing you turned

I like them, Chisteve. Especially the ones where you can see the rings. Owd - Maybe jam a wooden dowel inside the pipe to support the circle before you drill?

Post a photo of the last thing you turned

Pens n stuff! I forgot to write down which woods they were - I think the light pen is Teak, no idea about the darker one, Purpleheart - which I learned that its gray when cut, but a bit of rubbing alcohol and letting it sunbathe for a bit makes it looks stunning after an hour or so. The mallet...

    Charnwood W815 belt tension

I'm with you on this one, Demo. I'd much rather spend a little more prep time taking the corners off on the band saw :D As this is just a hobby for me, I don't really need to monetise my time.

Parkside (Lidl) Wet and Dry Vacuum Cleaner worth buying?

You can get a Titan or Einhell from screwfix/toolstation for just under £50. Parkside tools tend to be a bit hit or miss, and the warranty also has very mixed reviews. With a store that regularly stocks the item, they'll have the ability to straight swap it out. As the 'middle of Lidl' is...

    Charnwood W815 belt tension

Fingers crossed for tomorrow. I'd already turned the carbide bit once, just in case it was that. With regards to sharpening - A whole set from amazon is £12, and a 10pc box of a single flavour is less than a tenner, so I don't really see the need to sharpen them. All that being said, I'm still...

    Charnwood W815 belt tension

Thanks Stenik, I just looked up Glen Teagle, and it turns out I'd actually watched one of his videos last night! the one where he turns a bit of firewood into a little cup with bark still on the rim. Was a really nice video, As it came across as a genuine 'I had some spare time this evening...

    Charnwood W815 belt tension

Think it's along the lines of this video: The guy explains how and why, but I've linked the start of him actually turning it.

    Charnwood W815 belt tension

The lathe is a Charnwood W815, and I'm using Carbide tools. I'm based in Plymouth and there is a local woodturning group which meets once a month which runs beginner courses, but they are fully booked each month until November. I feel like many of the issues I'm having are down to the belt...

    Charnwood W815 belt tension

Grrrrr. Turns out, the 1 click per rev was nothing to do with the brushes - It was also related to the belt tension. To get to the brushes, I had to loosen the motor, so thats probably what cured it. However, I'm still getting slippage on the belt, and pretty erratic turning results. I'm...

    What constitutes 'handmade' ?

I understand your logic, but I feel like there's a personal line there. In your mind (If I'm reading it right) Using a bandsaw to get a straight cut is no longer 'handmade' because little skill is required. On the other hand, a significant amount of things that a woodworker makes are things...

    Charnwood W815 belt tension

Thanks Robbo, I saw that 'cutting into the face' tip on youtube, so I gave it a go - I think the main issue was the belt slippage, as the whole process was really slow going. The carbide tip had 2 or 3 projects under it's belt, so was still pretty keen. Thanks for the belt tip - It's exactly...

    Charnwood W815 belt tension

My lathe was making a clicking sound once per revolution, so I popped the brushes out and re-seated them, which solved the issue. Turned a couple of pens, and all was good in the land. I decided to try my hand at turning a bowl. I only have 1 bowl gouge I got from a car boot sale, and not...

Parkside belt sander, mains, any good?

To be fair, belt sanders pop up fairly commonly on Gumtree

Parkside belt sander, mains, any good?

My general rule for Parkside stuff is to get them for the one-off jobs or to see if a tool is right for the job. If it breaks through normal use, then I know I use that tool enough to justify getting one of a more reputable brand. Something that I know I'll use a lot, I'll skip the Parkside...

    Laser Cutters

Lightburn is worth every penny. Using it during the full-function trial was a dream compared to the other free programs out there. It was only after I made those test patterns that I found out Lightburn can do it for me... Ah well!
