    Jugendstil Pedestal Desk with Hutch

About a year ago, I was asked to make this desk, but the Covid crisis put a lot of things on hold. This job included. Anyway, it’s done now and it’s out of the shop. There’s probably a good 30 days of work in it. Can’t say for certain, as I’ve always got a few irons in the fire. So, the desk...

Post a photo of the last thing you made

I made a pedestal desk with a hutch. Common Walnut. Jugendstil/ Liberty... Or as the Germans would say an aufsatzschreibtisch. It is a copy of a 1900 piece, which the client found here: https://www.antiques-atlas.com/antique/antique_art_nouveau_desk_english_victorian_/as272a2663...

    The Impossible question.

When I was younger, I liked the poetry/ lyrics of Ian Dury. Yeah, he rhymes Tina and Cortina, but still... :) Almost 45 year since the New Boots and Panties album. Time flies. Tom Waits, Cohen also. Quite a lot of them actually. Pogues...

    Coincidentally timed email scam

I've had one telling me my PayPal account has been suspended. I just have to click here and log in with my username and password to make things right. :)

    Parkside compressor - a lemon?

1 bar a day isn't that bad. It is an entry level compressor after all. As said above, if in doubt, take it back.

I don't think they would believe it nowadays?

Pulling you by the side burn, rapping your knuckles with a ruler...all common pedagogical methods in the 70s. :) My 2nd grade teacher, had a leather strap in her purse. She called it Oscar. No one complained, we'd just hope she wouldn't tell our parents, cause then you'd get seconds when you got...

    Timber thickness glazed doors

It's about 15 kilos of glass. Shouldn't be a problem if packed properly. Even for 41mm. Go for traditional M&Ts. 2 on the bottom rail, horns and all that... Not a job for loose tenons.

    Strange Request

I'd try some of those wax filler sticks they use when doing furniture restoration. You can find them in many colours. Sawdust and glue is best avoided, as it's very hard to match the wood.

    Old duffers rebellion.

In my neck of the woods, most elderly people have been vaccinated, so those in their 20s and 30s have let their guard down a bit. Now that no one can accuse them of 'Boomer remover' behaviour, speakeasy type clubs are becoming more common, with quite a few attending at times. The numbers have...

Workshop improvements Vs actually making stuff

Currently finishing a long overdue job, because of this covid mess. Most things arranged in a chronologically vertical manner. Wish I had time for a shop project.

Does oiling both faces really make a difference?

Apart from a few trestle tables, most solid wood table tops that I've seen weren't finished on both sides. (Anecdotal evidence, I know, but still...) I'd say the two main reasons a table top deforms in some way is that the stock wasn't seasoned properly to start with, the other is central...

Wood moisture meter for firewood logs - any recommendations?

Tap two logs together like rhythm sticks. If they produce a ringing sound, they're fine. If it's more like a 'thud', then they're not dry enough. A very scientific method. :)

Does oiling both faces really make a difference?

Unless you encapsulate it in some plastic/ epoxy type finish, there will always be an exchange of moisture with the surrounding environment. The greater this exchange, the more wood moves. Sometimes it will warp. Most finishes can not prevent this. Perhaps they might slow it down a bit. I think...

Does oiling both faces really make a difference?

Most traditionally made furniture only has finish on the outside and some pieces have survived many centuries. It might warp for a variety of reasons, but lacking a finish on one side is not a major one.

I don't think they would believe it nowadays?

Ha ha, yes, it was quite a common birthday present. But only if you had good grades at school. And most boys carried pocket knives, too. I was 14 when me and a mate of mine went on holiday without the parents for the first time. Wouldn't suggest that nowadays though.

    Frezite spindle moulder tooling

Well done! Shortening the stub tenon isn't the end of the world. A bit more tweaking and it should work fine. When a set is new, it doesn't have these issues, but as it gets sharpened over time, certain deviations creep in.
