    Buying Advice Pillar Drill/Morticer

I'm also looking for a morticer but have a limited budget & space...and next to no experience of them to make a sound judgement on what is quality or not. I can't afford to buy anything duff (axi AW16BMST2 ) but can't afford £500+ for something really good...the classic conundrum.. The voice in...

    How noisy are portable thicknessers?

Answer 1) Loud (even outdoors) + chip extractor = double loud. My neighbours don't care about my peace & quiet when they want to get p&^%"d up & argue/sing/stomp about/leave brats screaming loudly at 3/4/5am so I don't care about planing/hammering at 7/8/9am. Answer 2) I'd recommend Dewalt -...

Table top expansion - can someone explain?

There's nowt to see as it's all glued up.. but I've only done one end as space & clamps are not as plentiful as I'd like - so I could do the other end the correct way & see what happens. Also the top is pretty big & weighs a ton so it has to stay on my bench as I work other components... far...

Table top expansion - can someone explain?

yep..one I'll soon sit down to see at every mealtime if I'm not lucky... ho hum. The table I am replacing is a poorly thrown together, pine item (as opposed to my poorly made but labouriously made oak one).. with the same end board design. This piece was screwed on along it's length &...

    (another) First workbench questions

Now - sliding pegs/tool rests are very clever yet so simple ! I'm about to order Workbench Design by Chris' Swartz & sometime soon loads of double chunky larc (RichardT's holdfasts are in progress). ...I'm keen to figure out why all the benches I see are so narrow - how do people glue up...

How to plane wood to select thickness using only hand plane?

It's very straight forward but probably best to see how it's done. This DVD explains it very well and would be well worth getting http://www.finefurnituremaker.com/planepublic.htm I'd agree with this option - especially as it's on offer to newbies. It shows not just technique but honing your...

The chip breaker is as important as the blade

I've just had the same light switched on in my head only today. All this week I had been feeling right p&^%$ ff with myself & my woeful planing skills & then I watched the David Savage DVD yesterday about planing & eureka ! .. a few hours of jiggery pokery with my cheapo plastic handled...

    (another) First workbench questions

I had seen an mdf topped bench but thought it'd last no time at all but it must serve a purpose.. but I'd also seen a lot of really swish ones & thought they look unused & so even more pointless (unless they are extra careful workers)...as you say it's about needs, cash flow & ego I think I...

    (another) First workbench questions

Hi Marcos... thanks for the reply. I have big gaps in my knowledge & so what types of wood are best for specific situations/jobs is one of them. Pine for a bench does crop up a lot but it'd have to tight grained (figured) to fold a dog for long I recon... I'm in the 'tool above aethethics' camp...

    (another) First workbench questions

Hello Gents, I have put up with an inherited workbench for long enough now & really need to step up my game & make a proper one. I have looked at a few threads & I still have a few questions. 1) Bench dogs are 19mm but hold fasts are 22 or 23mm but all benches have 1 size hole as far as I can...

    Cheap, solid workbench top ?

..try taking a trip around your local industrial estate especially if there are metal working shops there.. imported metal comes in huge crates or pallets that costs money to dispose of (I've collected enough to build a small house but H&S meant a lot of hoop jumping to get it out). just an idea.

    Clear vision - or dust?

Scuba divers & snorkelers spit on their masks to stop them steaming up... ok it's not exactly hygenic but it's a cheap & easy fix.

Suggestions for a small dust/chip extractor

Hello Noggsy, I have one of these & it is very noisey ..& a bit rubbish ..if p/t means Planer/Thicknesser then this is not what I'd recommend. The filter & motor is right up against the inlet & so I have found it blocks very easily. I bought it as it was the only one I could get easily that...

Best glue - beginner needs advice

I am reliably informed that slithers of wood work well. .or you can try hidden wedges (not sure of real name) in the end of the tennons but once assembled the pieces will not come apart again. The basic idea is that the further in that the tennon & wedge go in the more the wedge is pushed...

    I want something made?

I have one of those archival boxes along with the carry case & the special clear sleeves for my hand printed (real) photographs ..it cost me a small fortune at a time when I could barely afford to feed myself (in a previous life it seems)..& they are archival because they do not use glues or...

    Metal detector usage?

I'd look at the depth that they scan to first..the little wizard gives no details at all of this so i'd dismiss that 1 straight away ! I use a normal field type one (on a stick) & it picks up my steel toe caps.. My Mom does detecting (but not in timber) & I've been with her to this shop in...
