    Entomology Question

Thanks Harbo but Ladybird larva are matt black & orange & do not have wings, which also do a funky defensive move when disturbed- this seems to be an adult beetle with blue wing casing that just wonders about a bit. I've a sinking feeling about this..

    Entomology Question

Hello Gents, I found 2 of these blue beetles mooching about my drying wood in my workshop - is this bad news?

Chisels & chiselling - questions, questions

Thanks guys, that's great - esp CC. I'm still stuck for handle choice tho - is there a place that I can go to to get my hands on Sorby's & Isles? There is a woodwork fair in Somerset that I thought might be worth going to (I'll take cash & leave plastic at home!) but not sure - a lot of sites...

Chisels & chiselling - questions, questions

Hello Gents, The time has come to get some decent chisels & I am almost sure to go for Sorby's (because they are English & I've read good things about them although I've not got my hands on 1 & that they are not as good today as the olduns- the American ones I handled at Axi seem very light &...

Jobs in another land (new zealand)

I'd say look into getting a working holiday visa so you can 'try before you buy' ( I got 1 for Aus but I am not sure if NZ does a similar scheme). I'd definately recommend going to Aus for a few years ! The Antipodeans are very professional with a great standard of living & outlook on life -...

Which Software do you use? Sketchup, AutoCAD or another?

Although I love to do 'technical drawing' as it was called at school I have to admit that getting an instant cutting list & faster, better results make me think that a good software is needed. I have many years experience of photoshop & a good grasp of (non code writing) web design software &...

    Drawers in stairs question.

How about a nice cupboard under the stairs instead? haha..that's exactly what someone else said..funny how I did not question the idea but others have more sense. The house is small & full chocka & these stairs go up to 3rd floor ..so the back is the ceiling for the first set of stairs - no...

    Drawers in stairs question.

Hello, I've been asked to look in to installing drawers into a staircase in a victorian terrace house- the concept is that the riser will become the drawer front which seems simple enough but I have never seen how old staircases are put together so I need advice please. The designs online are...

What to buy first - router or table saw?

I'd go for a table saw hands down but cheap startrite (?) is inacurate rubbish. A router from cash converters can be mounted to a skip salvaged table/work top/shelf with this plate: http://www.axminster.co.uk/axminster-ax ... sionid=cxl I made use of the family sewing machine table for mine...

What to buy first - router or table saw?

..with loose cuffs & no rifing knife..that last bit makes my scar itch. But I am really impressed with his methodical planning/pattern making. It puts my method of a few sketches on a *** packet to shame

    Kity K5 combi machine

If you fancy a drive down to Bordeau my mate is trying to flog his K5 (or another Kit model that looks very similar). It looks in mint condition...but yes - it's not exactly close by. I am toying with the idea of taking a long 'business trip' down there  ..& boost my vitamin D at same time.

    zinc work-top

"Silicone sealer" is the answer to many of these issues esp Dowe Coning (?) but it's tricky to spread evenly. I know it's really difficult to pry things apart that have been siliconed. A contact adhesive might also be good.

PVA Glue Going Black on Oak

I am my own hardest critic.. although I am glad to say that my plonkerometer is no longer red lining.

    Pillar drill &/ or Morticer

I have a nice router but the noise, dust & all the PPE put me off a bit..not to mention the intense concentration needed- a morticer just seems to be a far less stressful option...but I suppose with a good jig, a better hose on my extractor & the money to be saved perhaps I need to rethink...

    Pillar drill &/ or Morticer

Hello Gents, I am fairly new to buying good quality machinery & so need some advice on what you'd recommend & what makes to look out for. I want a morticer but a brand new, good quality one is expensive so I was thinking of getting a decent old pillar drill & fit it with a mortice chisel & get...

PVA Glue Going Black on Oak

 what a plonker I am...I've sussed it out thanks to your help. ..I lost my usual glue bottle nozzle cap & used a steel bolt instead (as a stopper) which has gone rusty.. you get the rest. It's not funny how a little lack of foresight can cost a lot of grief... & that wisdom is hard won...

PVA Glue Going Black on Oak

Hello Gents, I understand that tannins in Oak react with iron but can someone enlighten me as to why PVA glue turns black too- but only sometimes ?..I'm pretty sure it doesn't happen all the time. I know that it should not matter as my joints should be as tight as a gnats chuff so as not to...

I must have a go at one of these ...

The French & Spanish were/are good at all that fancy iron scroll work & beautiful doors. (I feel better now knowing I'm not the only 1 going about taking pics of doors & joints.. there's something very appealing about doors). In the Brum Museum & Art Gallery they have some excellent iron...
