    Screwfix catalogues disappear.

to me the main advantage of click & collect is that I don’t waste time and petrol going to buy something that is not in stock at my local Screwfix. However, having said that, their stock levels often seem to be lower than they used to be. Maybe it’s me. I mainly go for electrical stuff.

    Mortgage rates / interest etc

So true. I remember when I married in 1975 we had a new cooker only because my parents paid for it. We had a succession of three piece suites, given to us, each slightly better than the previous one, and we laughingly told friends we had a colour TV Simply because it had a bright orange...

Anyone remember what a litre of heating oil cost in 1988.

I remember in the very early ‘60s my parents moved into a bungalow and had oil fired central heating installed. Dad proudly told us that the heating oil was six (old pence) a Gallon. That boiler had a cast iron heat exchanger and lasted almost 30 years.

    Feeling old

I’m 72 but otherwise very similar. They, whoever they may be, say that we have to accomplish/complete a certain number of projects before we clock off. I’ m so far behind perhaps I’ll be immortal…..

Quite right. Death is overrated in my book anyway.

    .

Couple of bits. The first house my (then) wife an I went after was a bog standard end terrace two up two down in Watford in Hertfordshire. £5000. The council offered us a 100% low start mortgage, starting at £80 per month, going up to £100 after 5 years. I lay awake at night wondering where the...

American Fridge Freezer fix or buy another

My grandson had two Samsung American style fridge freezers, the second was a warranty replacement that also failed in less than a year. Newer ones may be OK, different gas and all that, but………….

    Optimising hot water schedule

Pardon me for showing my ignorance, but can someone explains what a “smart” pump is, and how it would be controlled? Does it rely on some form of instruction from the boiler, or is it a freestanding unit that could be retrofitted to an existing system?

The language is mutating (and always has done)

I completely agree. (I had the fortune/misfortune to go to a traditional grammar school, for my sins.) One thing I really get wound up by is the fashion to add a “k” to the end of words, I.e. somethingk. Maybe delete the “g“ according to taste? I have even heard it said quite frequently on the BBC.

What ideas have you had for reducing Electricity consumption

The one we were offered is the 14-1 but seems to be complete with all the extras. However, I just looked on F/B Marketplace, and there seems to be quite a few up for sale, different models. So the question is are they just getting rid of them because they cannot be bothered with them, or are...

What ideas have you had for reducing Electricity consumption

Phil, how do you get on with your Ninja Foodi? My wife and I have been discussing whether to get one. A local family have one for sale secondhand but almost new. They freely admit they don’t use it and don’t really get on with it. There are several components to this. First is the cost. They are...

What ideas have you had for reducing Electricity consumption

My needs and finances are about the DeWalt - other brands are available - level. Seriously, I am happy to do my bit. But if you consider the environmental cost in the manufacture of some of these products, where do you draw the line? At my (very low) skill level, I get a better straight line cut...

What ideas have you had for reducing Electricity consumption

Very interested in one of these - seem to be all the rage at the moment - but the initial cost is eye watering. How long before you get you investment back?

    Solar panels.

I find this thread really interesting. My wife and I have just returned from a visit to friends in the East Riding, and they have just had a fairly big solar system installed. 15 panels which to me in my ignorance seemed odd. They are fitted on two elevations, 12 to catch the early sun, 3 late...

Car electrics. Anyone here any good?!

Weight of copper? Maybe but I don’t think so. For many years the thought has been this is simply to keep all the main dealers in highly profitable business, and shut down the independent who cannot afford all the expensive equipment or the licenses needed to run the right software. the reason...
