    Scribing tenons

Fat Freddy, I agree with you scribing is preferable, indeed if I had a batch of doors to make I would make sure I had the correct tooling to do the job. What I thought we were talking about here is another approach apart from scribing which is what I did on a one off door. Scribes...

    Scribing tenons

The moulded section of rails and stiles I mitred have not opened, I used Cascamite to glue tenons together, I would not contemplate Mitre Mate on anything but kitchen pelmet and cornice. True though it would drive you mad with that amount of joints. I have also used the method Pac1 suggests...

    Scribing tenons

Tim, Perhaps you could mitre the moulded parts of rail and stile, I did this on an internal door and it worked well. make a mitre box to fit over rail and stile for paring with a chisel, this will aid accuracy and speed up the job. Some nice work you`ve done Tim. Kind regards, Mark W

    Crapola mags....

Yetloh, I like the chest of drawers and I also like the look of other cnc cut furniture, but to me they are made by computer programmers not cabinet makers! The process of making for me sometimes outweighs the finished product, a sharp plane, a sharp chisel, whatever tool are a joy to...

    Crapola mags....

I agree with most of the above comments but I feel we should educate customers. If they don`t know what a dovetail is then explain it, explain the difference between hand cut and machined. Most people I have encountered who want bespoke furniture do know a bit about it and want an authentic...

    Crapola mags....

softmoose, I don`t think Kevin Ley lacks the skill to cut joints by hand, some of his pieces do have handcut dovetails e.tc. In fact what I should have said was that the piece in question did not have any traditional joints. To me a tenon cut on the table saw is just as good as...

    Crapola mags....

If the decline of F&C continues my subscription will be cancelled, I did not realize articles were recycled and ended up in multiple magazines, this is very poor. In the latest issue I also think Kevin Ley is on a slippery slope, his cabinet is constructed with Dominoes, Biscuits and Pocket...

    Crapola mags....

I emailed the the GMC group editor Mark Baker when he was standing in after Michael Huntley left. I put some points to him regarding the decline of F&C, which in my view started when Michael Huntley took over. What prompted my letter was the piece Alan Holtam was doing in issue 158, which in my...

Rob Cosman DVD's and his dovetail saw

Conger, I have a carpentry background and was taught by my brother (now in his fifties) he did a proper apprenticeship which was five years at the time, he was taught by older men who`s apprenticeships were seven years. My brother and I are both tool and woodworking enthusiasts, we...

Camellia Oil - best mail-order supplier

Ivan, I`m interested in the use of Rapeseed oil, how long have you been using it and are there any draw backs with it, for example does it go mouldy. Kind regards, Mark W

Anyone have problems with quality control on a LN plane?

I know people in the kitchen trade who discribe themselves as cabinet makers, which on the face of it is true, but five pieces of melamine board screwed and doweled together is not quite the same. Kind regards, Mark W

Anyone have problems with quality control on a LN plane?

The only issue I`ve had with an expensive tool was a fishtail chisel from Blue Spruce, when it arrived in its lovely box the African Blackwood handle was chipped, Classic Handtools replaced it without question. Perhaps one of you can answer a question for me, some of you refer to yourselves as...

    Lyndhurst Woodworking

I bought an extractor fan from Lydhurst back in January, the address and phone number on the receipt are as follows: Unit 2 (rear of Wyvale Garden Centre) Milbury Heath, Thornbury, Glos, GL12 8QH 01454413110. As the address suggests it is or was behind a garden centre, I collected the dust...

Rob Cosman DVD's and his dovetail saw

Dunbarhamlin, Rob Cosman also raises the honing angle by a couple of degrees, he does this and the ruler trick, these are the best time saving methods I have ever used and both produce an excellent edge. Both are original ideas by David Charlesworth, so as I said before...
