    Cheap micrometers

Inspector Pete has summed it up very well in my opinion! You don’t say whether you are looking for imperial or metric ? Quality always pays dividends long term, all my original measuring tools purchased mainly during my apprenticeship (1960/65) are of British, Swiss, American or other European...

Build your own home - UK

Well I haven’t read all the posts but we did this in 1967 still live there ! All DIY with some help here and there from drawing plans, planning consent , planners were understanding and helpful, used tradesmen for some jobs I was not confident on and worked as a labourer for them . I would...

Great as a flux when lead casting [lead vice jaws] also as has been said excellent for plumbers solder as a flux. Also works well for tempering springs when blazing off after hardening.

    Track saws and thin blades

Hi, not sure what you mean by glued together ? The worktop was split down the middle to make two boards from each then used as the base, ends and centre sections for the units in the attached photo. Its now 4 years ago could not swear to 1/2 mm !!! but fine for the job in hand.

    Electric planer

I too favoured the Makita but at the time the time the chip port worked only one way [none adjustable] thus it would have covered me with waste material -- now on later models it reverses as did the the Bosch at the time of purchase hence my choosing it.

    Track saws and thin blades

An expert on track saws I am not ! However I purchased a Bosch -- similar to Mafell when we moved our business to a new site and did the fitting out ourselves, for some units required we purchased engineered oak worktops that had to be split in half, they were 2m long x 28mm thick & 600? wide...

How to pare tenons plumb and square

Tibi, it may seem a silly question but do you wear spectacles? The reason is I do and before having to I could “eyeball” a cut very very close to square, now with specs the only way is mark out and follow the line ! The problem is astigmatism correction factored into prescription spectacles.

    Electric planer

Couple of points, I had an inexpensive Bosch DIY range, it had an inherent problem, the adjustable sole plate at the front was not parallel to the rear plate caused problems! Eventually bought a better model from Bosch, I was torn between Bosch and Makita, the Makita had a one way ejection port...

    Diamond sharpening, buying advice !

Mikey, a wise choice IMO , similar to the double sided one I bought (early post) been very pleased with mine for the price. My philosophy on tool purchase is the same as yours, bye cheap bye twice ! So with a caveat that other than a one off use I always buy the best I can. Good luck

    Diamond sharpening, buying advice !

Hi, I looked at many of the expensive offerings but never jumped in ! However a local hardware/ tool shop had the Faithful double sided one on offer at £20 ? If memory is good ! That was around 3/4 years ago but they still seem to be available in the £25/£30 range. For the price I am very...

How to benefit from smart meters?

Don’t have one even though we are pestered constantly by our suppliers! Really cannot see any befit to us . However I wonder if at some point they will be used to control how much energy you are allowed to use ?? Before your supply is restricted!

Can you dream up a use for.....

Presume it’s the oscillating shaft that’s broken off ? Many years ago this happened to me so I dismantled the unit, made and fitted a new one ! They do have a rotary motor and a mechanical mechanism to convert the motion. The motor unit is extracted downwards from the outer shell —- so long...

    compound slide?

Just put compound slide into your search engine or look on eBay - lots on there just depends on what you want it to do and what facilities you have to do any mods. Many have a 2 way function but some are £20?? so cheap enough to use what parts you want -- maybe? Worth looking at the images as...

    Abandoned car

(Even if declared SORN it cannot be stored in a Car Park or even in your garden.) I agree with Steve, he beat me to it ! You cannot keep it or park it on a public highway but you can keep it on any private land or road. We have a sports car and run it from April to October then put it on SORN ...

    Myford ML8 Spindle washer

OK thanks gentlemen, interesting that they were supplied with the machines when new. I will however machine the register counterbore in the adaptor so it will fit with or without the washer, easy to do it now whilst I have my lathe set up. I will keep the washers in place though. Regards John
