Suggestions for a woodworking lathe tool set for a beginner

That's hardly a basic tool. I'd been turning for decades before I bought one. They're also not an easy tool for the inexperienced to sharpen or use. More usefully; A parting tool. A 3/8" beading and parting tool. Both the above were tools I bought when I first started 35yrs ago and have had...

    Setting up a plane

I'd suggest your first thing to do is find a Men's shed or similar and get someone to show you how a plane is used and assess whether your efforts at sharpening your Record have been good enough. Even an Axminster store may be able to help as the ones I've visited have had demonstration areas...

Can't find the water valve in the street. Any ideas?

This is my understanding of it. Old lead pipework will now have enough limescale in it to coat it and protect the water supply. It became illegal to use lead for water pipes in the UK from 1970, so they're all old now. Risks only occur if the pipework is modified and new lead exposed.

    Doweller minimum fence height

They maybe the least strong of the three options listed, but still a sound choice for cabinet construction unless you're expecting people to actually climb up the shelves.

Amazon Photos: free £15 - what's the catch?

No particular catch. It's just a way to get you to use their photo storage system. You're already paying for it with your Prime membership. Their hope is that if you've got lots of your content stored on AWS (Amazon web services) you'll be less likely to drop your Prime subscription when it...

    Doweller minimum fence height

Nice for solid wood, but not really suitable for man made boards as the OPO plans to use. Dowels, biscuits or loose tenons are far more suitable. The reputation of the Triton doweller isn't good, I'd suggest getting a refund while you can and get a biscuit jointer instead.

I just want a nice METRIC ONLY comination square

Just poking at their advertising isn't helpful. On my experience of ownership, you'll not find the tools wanting.

I just want a nice METRIC ONLY comination square

It's obviously people's choice as to who they spend their money with. I brought Presch because of good reviews and the product in hand is excellent. Just because something is made in Germany doesn't automatically make it good, any more than anything from China is bad, there's good and bad from both.

I just want a nice METRIC ONLY comination square

To a large degree. I can understand why some people might on ethical grounds want to buy from the most sustainable supplier or not buy from places with poor human rights records.

I just want a nice METRIC ONLY comination square

Yes, it's a small new company. That doesn't mean they have to be manufacturing in the far east. I don't see you making the same accusation of Benchdogs.co.uk who are smaller and newer. As I said in my previous post; If it was made elsewhere it would need to state that on the packaging. It's not...

I just want a nice METRIC ONLY comination square

It's not unknown for cheap quality tools to made in Germany (See Parkside). The box Presch tools are presented in only lists their German address. If they were manufactured elsewhere I'd expect that to have to mentioned to comply with UK/EU labelling law. I recently bought one of their squares...

    Router and Router Table advice

I made a 'router table' from a big sheet of 6mm aluminium with some channel on both edges to keep it straight. Simple hole in the middle and bolt the router(Elu 177E) on. No need for legs, the channel is clamped down to the front of the workbench with the router overhanging. The front is...

Axminster 'out of stock'? Maybe not

It will also probably vary with the value and rarity of the item. I would have thought that a Veritas shooting plane is a rare sale for them and they won't have many in stock across the whole company. So shipping it around makes more economic sense.

Axminster 'out of stock'? Maybe not

They send out mail order items centrally, so their main web site will sometimes show an item as 'out of stock' if it's not in their distribution centre, but there may be items sitting on shop shelves. You can check the local shop's stock online and it will show out of stock, low or available...

    Buying from EU

Getting some decent politicians in is only part of the answer. What's also needed is an honest media that isn't controlled by a tiny number of foreign interests pushing their own agendas. Plus attempting to limit social media being used to push political advertising without any regulation.

    Buying from EU

No, there wasn't a party election at all. Sunak got it without anyone voting for him as all other candidates withdrew. Last PM "elected" within the tory party was Liz Truss and we know how well that went :-(

You can only buy one - which one

The dovetail jigs top out at £600, £300 less than a Domino outfit. The expensive(£1200) Leigh jig is a mortice and tenon jig, not dovetail. Depends on what you're making. I doubt I'd pay £1200 for a M+T jig rather than a Domino, but a Domino won't make visually wonderful dovetails liker the...
