looking to buy a wet stone grinder for flat chisels

The variable angle tool platform on the SPE is exceptionally well designed and engineered. I've not tried or seen anything else similar.

Respirator - Trend Airshield Pro or something else

That's because they've only been selling it for a few weeks now. FWIW it's not a 'look alike' it's a re-badge, so everything JSP is the same. It's also supplied with the impact protection visor as standard, unlike some other suppliers. I've tried both now, bit I'm still not sure which is best...

    Birch Ply Regional Pricing Index

Too right, even published bulk discounts can take up to 30% off prices, and probably even more that are meant to be kept confidential, so it's pretty damn important to include.

    Beginner question - gloves

Thanks for the heads up on that, I'll get on their mailing list. The one curious omission I've found so far is no chainsaw protection kit, apart from eye wateringly expensive boots.

    Beginner question - gloves

I think that is a bit too 'old school'. I'd agree that the leather gloves being discussed still wouldn't be a good option, but thin latex style gloves really present no danger. They tear SO easily that they couldn't drag your hands into machinery. In this case they would offer the sort allergen...

    Birch Ply Regional Pricing Index

No. The first poster to quote £42 was logger, but no mention of VAT, bulk rates or delivery, next was Mark-numbers and again no details on VAT/bulk/delivery. Unless you know if prices includes VAT, delivery and if it was for a single sheet rate, multi sheet rate, a favoured regular...

    Birch Ply Regional Pricing Index

For what ? one sheet or 50 ? delivered or not ? That quoted price of £42 didn't actually state it included VAT So far not much more use than two minutes with Google.

    Birch Ply Regional Pricing Index

We know it's not been a consistent 'like for like' comparison already as some prices are 'delivered' and some are collect only. I have to agree with Custard that this is a pretty futile exercise.

    For my next question...chucks

Well that would save a few tedious threads here in January ;-) I'd also guess it'll save Axi a fair amount too. Having had two major re-designs on their site in quick succession they must have invested heavily in e-commerce in the last two years. A bit of a shame though, some things remain...

    For my next question...chucks

Beware, they usually raise their prices once a year in January when they release their new catalogue. Although they do also drop prices through the year on some items. Last year the new catalogues dropped through people's letter boxes at the end of December, and may have been in store too...

    Dare I ask!

Which ever you choose it could be a significant investment, so don't rush into it. Take up Custard's invitation to see a SPE in action for some unbiased advice. You're also not very far away from Yandles. They have the SPE on display to try, plus they also stock Tormek, Triton and Record wet...

    For my next question...chucks

The Catch 22 is that without a chuck, bowl turning can be awkward and you're less likely to enjoy it. A chuck can be damn useful for spindle turning anyway.

    For my next question...chucks

You can get a huge amount achieved without needing lots of accessories for a scroll chuck. The "C" type jaws are a good basic set to start that cover a huge range of possibilities. They also take useful cheap extras like a screw chuck/faceplate http://www.axminster.co.uk/axminster-sc ...

    Beginner question - gloves

From the little I know about this field, you'd have been mainly be making subtle (dust making) cuts and sanding tropical hardwoods. This is probably the most allergenic woodworking you could get involved with. Turning may offer a more benign style of woodwork. Large shaving should be less prone...

    Beginner question - gloves

Never found that myself. The creams I've used have been absorbed well. Even a dollop of Swarfega well rubbed in has worked well for me.

    Beginner question - gloves

You might find that you may only need protection when sanding, so latex gloves might not be too bad to wear for short periods sanding. I can't think of any 'break away' gloves. Have you tried using a barrier cream to prevent irritation ?

    bandsaw tyres

The words I used were 'balanced view' In other words, look at all the reviews and evaluate which to take seriously and which to ignore. It's quite common to see reviews mark down kit because of supply and delivery problems, nice to know, but irrelevant if you're trying to find out about the...

    bandsaw tyres

You can find bad reviews on everything if you seek them out. The important part is to seek a balanced view of new products. It would help anyone wanting to give advice to state what machine you have.

    Dare I ask!

From what I've seen, anything written above about the Tormek can be said for the Triton/Scheppach/Record wet stone systems. They all look pretty much identical and the jigs may be interchangeable between brands (check first though). Do the sums on the various bits you'll need to match facilities...
