    Paul, his version of sharpening

I was taught to hand cut dovetails at school, and yes it IS really difficult. One small error can spoil a whole project, get a router+jig set up and it's pretty straight forward.

    Paul, his version of sharpening

It really isn't. When I first wanted to put a decorative profile on a timber edge, an electric router delivered a great result after ten minutes of practice. I've repeatedly tried using moulding planes and never got such a good and fast result. Similarly, a planer thicknesser will deliver...

    Paul, his version of sharpening

From the article; "The assumption that this was progress was based on the misconception that no one today could cut that dovetail accurately and quickly by hand. That’s when I stepped in. I’d always taught from a lived life working with hand tools; fifty years in the saddle gives you a balanced...

    Luxury sharpening

Having played with the Axi machine in their showroom, I wouldn't swap it for my ProEdge. The angled tool rest plate on the Sorby is simple, easy and repeatable to set. It's just hugely useful and there's nothing like that on the Axi. I've read of someone moaning they couldn't set a PE up to do...

    Kity 636

They're freely available to download from Thingiverse, so I've already got them thanks :) The package from Thingiverse also includes the original design files for Fusion 360, so it might be possible to edit them and break the design down to sizes more easily(aka affordably) printed.

Thanks for mentioning those 3D printable parts for the 636. They should be a great upgrade for the PT.

    Woodturning Lathe Speed “Wandering”

Maybe give Scott and Sargent a call at Horsham. They may have a technician that can look at it. If you're lucky it might be just a failed reversing switch and dirty/failed speed potentiometer which might be a cheap fix. If not it could be terminal :-(

    Kity 636

Wow, I've never come across Paragon before, their hammered finishes look damn close* to the Kity green Workshop Machinery Colours *Given the lack of absolute accuracy that's possible with uncalibrated colours on computer systems

    Kity 636

I very much doubt it. It appears to be more like Hammerite style paint with a mottled metallic appearance, I would expect it would be very difficult to match to. I'd just clean any rust off and either lacquer over bare metal or wax it. Retain some patina of use. I don't think it's a machine so...

There should be a cover over the belt drive that mounts on that hexagon shaft with a threaded end. You might have already taken if off before taking photos though ?? I've had mine for 35 years and it was secondhand when I bought it.

    Reccomend me a whetstone/sharpening setup under £50

Have you read the details; "The Kit is designed primarily for sharpening cook’s/chef’s kitchen knives"

    Standard lamp

I'd be concerned that with most of the length of the tool behind the cutting bit being a smaller diameter it would be far more likely to wander off centre. For it's intended use a degree of wander wouldn't be a problem, but when turning a relatively thin part things might be very different.

    Buffing kits

I went through this a few years back. You can save some money certainly by buying individually from a specialist polishing supplier, but the amount you save isn't huge. I ended up buying the Chestnut kit and have been very happy with it. One nice feature is the mandrel fits nicely in the...

    Tyme Avon Start up

The Avon is great basic lathe. It sounds like either the switch is broken or the starting capacitor has failed. Popping in a new capacitor is probably the best first option. Easy enough to do if you're experienced and confident with mains wiring, but don't try it if you're not. The whole motor...

    Sharpening chisels - which grit

I use 120 or 240 belts to sharpen most woodturning tools, I don't see much, if any, improvement going finer. For skews I'll usually just touch up the edge with a 600 diamond card.

    A trip to a toolshop

A classic example of an old tool shop. Virtually nothing on display, but if you knew what you needed, they had it, and someone in a brown coat would go and find it in the back rooms. A few good bargains to be had there when it finally closed. I was nearer to Franchi further along Holloway road...

    A trip to a toolshop

I went a few years ago and it was TINY inside, really difficult to move around and find anything in or just browse. Great if you know what you want, but not quite the same 'destination quality' that the big sheds like Axminster have. There you can wander around, try things, get a free tea/coffee...

    A trip to a toolshop

Indeed, the shop in Desborough road was one of those old world tool shops full of unusual tools you never knew existed. It was also good for DeWalt/Elu spares too. That shop has now closed and they've moved further up the hill and still supply a massive range of fixtures and fittings. I suspect...

    Gout 😥

Taking a pill every day or occasional screaming pain ? It really isn't a hard decision.

    Crazy humidity today

I've never seen condensation like it here in my unheated garage workshop. 15 degree temperature rise in less than 12hrs. Not just the big bits of cast iron suffering either, there's even droplets running down plastic finish bottles.
