marking gauge, should the blade turn?

To have a rolling disk would need a bearing to stop it wobbling. Why bother when it’s not needed. there you go

    Fitting a ceiling light.

The problem with people recommending trades… do they know what good looks like? There’s a cowboy plumber across the road from us, someone said “he’s very good, did a wonderful job on my leaking tap”… if you needed a plumber for a leaking tap, you probably don’t know if they did a good job or...

    Fitting a ceiling light.

Take the isolator out and put it in your pocket, or whatever else means it’s all off and nobody else can turn it back on. I was replacing a light fitting for a neighbour once having switched the mains isolator off, then I heard the kettle boiling.

Acceptable tolerance for thicknesser - parallelism of cutter head to the bed

Last time I looked at an old Wadkin price list for a machine someone was extolling the virtues of here, it was just over 50% of the annual average salary at the time, so an equivalent now would be £16k. If you are comparing anything less in price, it’s not a fair comparison and it really is...

Acceptable tolerance for thicknesser - parallelism of cutter head to the bed

There’s nothing wrong with the way your machine has been made, if it’s out of alignment it was set wrong at the factory. If it’s in tolerance and it works how it should, it’s just fine. Million pound Swiss machinery is made with sheet steel bodywork, so is that from Lidl. If old machines are...

Cleaning sealed ball bearings, questions about stuff.

I must be tired, almost sounds like you want to replace some premium bearings with old dirty ones after you’ve fudged around with them? Sounds about as good an idea as reusing a stretched bolt or a cracked o-ring.

Why did furniture makers put their mark on an invisible surface ?

Manufacturers have been using visible branding for a very long time, it’s not a new idea, the guys who painted inside Egyptian tombs left their trademarks. If you buy an ikea wardrobe now does it have Ikea written on it? No, but it might have a label on the back.

    Flat or chamfered?

Yep, it’s draft. That design is mass produced and fairly clean, some of the lower volume parts have lumps and bumps all over the place and the wood is just hammered on till it’s in, they don’t make them like they used to, thankfully.

    Scraper Planes

I had one. I know others who had one (they are better at woodwork than me). We all sold them as we couldn’t get on with them.

    Best type of bolt head

For your application a cheap fastener will be fine. Socket caps are often damaged by people using worn hexagonal keys, they’re disposable tools. Greasing a thread often enables a substantially higher force to be generated, often too much for the fastener If it was hard to get the last one out...

    Mystery item - tester/microscope

It’s an inspection microscope. Can be used on film but also for anything you can’t take to a microscope, you take that to it, useful with a graticle to show size of defects, inclusions etc Still available, but the cheap USB powered ones are so effective now and you can capture straight to your...

    A Bucky Lamp WIP

I was wondering why you were making something that looked like a football as a lamp up until that last picture, that’s rather cool. As you look at it, do the tunnels of light appear to meet at the centre of the spheroid?

    Old furniture wood reclaiming

Watch out for old paint, lead wasn’t banned till quite recently and some methods of removing it will chuck it up in the air for you to inhale, so scraping and paint stripper are the safer options. But, on the plus side it tastes sweet
