Varnished kitchen worktop in lousy condition - which sander please?

I’ve yet to make a piece with grain that’s 150mm diameter yet random 3mm eccentricity, but I’m sure when it do the finish will be the same as on straight grain too

Varnished kitchen worktop in lousy condition - which sander please?

Here’s a top finished completely with a 3mm throw orbital sander, starting at 60-grit, going up to 240. Obviously if you tried to sand with the grain you’d have a job

List of notable woodworkers who use only hand tools

“made by hand” is just a fashionable statement for people who like to turn a blind eye to all the not by hand work that goes into anything. As you point out you’re quite happy to use a table saw etc to get the to good bit which is where you can’t use a machine. I suspect that even people...

    Just use the blade guard!

I see selective reading is in effect.

    How tall is too tall?

I’d go for one piece if it’s literally a simple bookshelf. Have you got wiggle room to get it between the floor and ceiling ok?

    Makita belt sander and brushes

Burned out or worn out? I’ve just kicked my 35 year old lawnmower back to life for the year, which involves sanding back the commutator to take off the soot, sharp edges and burned grass, then it runs like... an old lawnmower. The brushes are right at the end of life but they aren’t the thing...

treating woodworm on an old bench?

It’ll probably do what the charred finish does for most things, makes it look like burned toast. May as well do the job properly. Or buy £5 worth of woodworm treatment and be done with it Aidan

treating woodworm on an old bench?

I wasn’t meaning charring the surface, I mean the whole thing in a bonfire!

treating woodworm on an old bench?

Old school remedies include burning it, covering in tar or doing nothing. Kiln dried timber kept in a dry garage will also get affected, I’d treat it with an insecticide or burn it. Aidan

Using a router to make dowels

Yes it’ll work. But a router drill bit is the Gucci option if you are doing a lot Aidan

List of notable woodworkers who use only hand tools

He was a pioneer of knock-down, mail order catalogue, fashionable furniture... and died not particularly wealthy. I love my MDF furniture, if Chippendale had it available I’m sure he’d have used it. As for Rob Cosman... I’m not sure there’s much similarity, other than them both being the same...

    What actually happened to Elu?

About 19 years ago I bought a Trend T5 as it was similar to the Elu I had grown up using (but had speed control, huge bonus). The Trend castings had the same identifiers on as the Elu made a decade or so before. In the next ten years or so someone will say that their Katsu router is still going...

    Just use the blade guard!

The same type of person who tapes on their safety switch of the chainsaw so they can use it one-handed up a ladder balanced on a shed roof... he had a torso and a foot, between it was what has always reminded me of a dropped lasagne. Dinner time! :) Aidan

    Just use the blade guard!

I think they’re correct. You remove the guards, you intended to have an incident, therefore not an accident. So nice when we all agree :)

    Just use the blade guard!

It almost seems like the more YouTube videos you make the worse you are at woodwork, safety aside plenty of the most prolific posters are really not making anything very good. Whereas you have to wait ages for a Doucette and Wolfe post Aidan

    Hanging Frame for Leds

Give them a batten with two holes in that align with the keyhole plates, level the batten on the wall and drill through, makes mounting a doddle

Few questions on a shed/workshop build

That’s the trap of YouTube etc.... just because lots of people are doing it, doesn’t mean it’s right! It’s a bit like split washers for vibration resistance on bolted connections, they’re an “industry standard”, everyone does it... but they don’t actually work Aidan
  19. TheTiddles

    Just use the blade guard!

Here’s an imaginary story for you... A person has ten pints, gets in their car, doesn’t put their seatbelt on and crashes into a wall, they die. Is this an accident? By your logic yes. They didn’t deliberately intend to crash. By many others no. The person deliberately created an unsafe...

    Just use the blade guard!

Not really, why would you use one when you have a sliding table? It is possible to make a safe sled, I’ve seen two, one made by Steve Maskery, the other by me. In general they’re a way of reducing cutting depth and increasing danger, not a winning combination.
