    Office worktop build

If you want that left corner like that, you’ll need to make a chunky torsion box to stop it wiggling around, or add a bracket. single thickness board will need edges front and back for a shelf or a lot of supports.

Domino Jointers Are they really worth it, or just a gimic

Oh my, someone making money from making entertaining videos, this on the back of people selling furniture for money is almost too much to bear, it is surely only days till the implosion of human society…. out of curiosity ArferMo, what do you fill your days with adding to the benefit of...

    scaffold board rubbish

I too can’t believe people have the audacity to make something and sell it for money to people who want it, what is the world coming to?!

    Holes in bandsaw inserts

Holes in an injected part are best avoided, they make for awkward fills, weak points and ejection issues. Unless you’re using something fancy commodity plastic is phenomenally cheap, hence why it gets thrown away so much. I can see someone thinking it helps with dust extraction, I too don’t...

Large segmented blank for a Tondo frame

If you only have chipboard, I’d consider it a wise investment to buy some ply for the purpose, it’s a bit unnerving when things go out of balance on a lathe and it starts walking across the floor

I can see a need for a single manual machine in a school as it’s a good starter, but automated machines have been a thing since the punch-card loom was invented in 1725 and very little is made entirely manually, useful though they are, hence why they still exist. Someone who is a wizard at a...

Oh, I must have been in different ones, they’re all taught manual machining round here, and programming. We’ve got an apprentice, straight out of college, do you know what he knows? Loads, he’s frighteningly good.

I see what you’re saying, we are going to need that person in every stage of industry and service etc... and all those people are valuable but if we focus them on assembling commodity items, they will lose their jobs eventually as we can’t compete, but the same person building the latest...

Yes, it’s almost like saying some peoples lives are expendable is offensive, whatever next. If someone is upset for being called out for expressing that, I am not sorry, not in the slightest.

When I need a floor sweeping, I will know who to ask. edit - I have great respect for floor sweepers, see above about valuing people.

    Long tap

4 diameters, sorry yes that’s it, it might be fine, but if it wasn’t it would still be correct, which would not help you. You plan sounds better, or drill it out larger and press in a threaded insert For a small tap the shank is often waisted down, so tapping a deep hole sometimes means...

I see you have the common confusion as to what an engineer is or does. -Learning to use a spanner... 10-seconds for a toddler, less for an adult. -Calculating the pre-stress to put on with the spanner... many hours the first time, but you get quicker. -Determining if you need to be concerned...

    Long tap

You don’t usually go beyond 4D on a female thread as it’s plenty possible for the threads of the male fastener to clash and still be in tolerance with a standard ISO course, so no need to tap that deep either. If you’re just using a section of that thread you’ll be ok, but that’s a pretty funny...

I guess you mean your kids? And complaining about it by sitting at a screen may be a touch ironic. I’m going to guess you are not particularly young and don’t work with young people or kids much

The SR-71 was made with Russian titanium, German trench dugouts were built with blue-circle cement, it’s a common occurrence called “global trade”, it’s been going for a good few thousand years, it’s generally considered a good thing. A couple of countries have tried not doing it, Cambodia and...

Out of curiosity, why does anyone care if we make very simple, almost commodity items in the UK? I’d rather we focus our expertise in the doing of the difficult and valuable, letting someone else do the rest. They employ more people and drive our societal advance far more than making things...
